Gold eases

Gold eased on Friday but was still on course for its biggest weekly rise in two months after the euro zone's last-minute deal on containing debt crisis buoyed commodities and equities in the previous session.

Spot gold retreated from a one-month high of $1,751.99 to $1,735.49 an ounce by 13:32 SA time, down 0.5 percent from the previous close, but still on course for a gain of around 6 percent from a week earlier, the biggest one-week rise in two months, according to Reuters graphics.

“We had a really heavy week on the news front with the euro zone and US GDP...the market's trying to work out where gold should be, wondering if this euro zone package has solved the problem,” Mitsubishi analyst Matthew Turner said.

“There's been some euphoria all week, but now some people are saying the details are a bit sketchy. The problem is noone's quite sure what this means for gold. If it is trading like a risk asset then it should go up if scepticism sets in about the euro zone rescue.”

The precious metals rose on Thursday, boosted by gains in equities and commodities as the dollar dropped after a euro zone agreement to boost the region's bailout fund and slash Greece's debt.

Even as many investors returned to riskier assets, gold also benefited from some safe-haven flows by investors who remained wary about the euro zone agreement until more details emerge.

On Friday, the head of Europe's bailout fund said he does not expect to reach a conclusive deal with Chinese leaders during a visit to Beijing but expects the surplus-rich country to continue buying bonds issued by the fund.

US gold lost around 0.5 percent to $1,737.30, also headed for its sharpest one-week gain in two months with a 6.3 percent rise.

The dollar index edged up after suffering its biggest one-day loss in more than two years, as the euro rally paused. A stronger dollar makes commodities priced in the greenback more expensive for holders of other currencies.

“It's (gold) underperforming ... right now, which is not surprising us at all ... although we wouldn't rule out further consolidation at the current level, we still firmly believe that the risks in the system longer term justify even higher prices,” Commerzbank analyst Eugen Weinberg said.

ECONOMIC FUNDAMENTALS

The relief on Europe's problems, however temporary, will allow investors to shift their attention to other pressing concerns.

Many market watchers expect China's central bank to begin to loosen up its tight liquidity policy by the end of the year, as China's economic growth slows and hopes run high that inflation has peaked.

Holdings of the largest gold-backed exchange-traded-fund (ETF), New York's SPDR Gold Trust fell 0.05 percent from Wednesday to Thursday, while that of the largest silver-backed ETF, New York's iShares Silver Trust SLV, remained unchanged for the same period.

Recent data out of the United States showed that the world's biggest economy grew at its fastest pace in a year in the third quarter but consumer confidence in October dropped to a 2-1/2-year low.

With the US economy seeming to have stepped back from the edge of the cliff, investors expect little policy shift out of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on Nov. 1-2.

“Beyond the very near-term we think economic fundamentals will be watched more closely again. In this context, we still think that gold looks the strongest in the near term given low interest rates and improving technical momentum,” Credit Suisse said in a research note.

“We have more concerns for silver, despite the fact that it was the big winner yesterday. In silver, overvaluation remains a major risk. Apart from that the market is also more vulnerable to renewed swings in risk appetite than gold.”

Spot silver cut gains to $35.18 an ounce from $35.05 an ounce, on course for a weekly rise of around 13 percent - its biggest in more than three years.

The gold-silver ratio, used to measure how many ounces of silver is needed to buy an ounce of gold, fell to a one-month low below 50, indicating the extent of gold's outperformance over silver.

Platinum was a nudge higher at $1,633.24 an ounce, having earlier hit a one-month high at $1,658 an ounce.

Palladium was down more than 1 percent at $652.72 an ounce. - Reuters

Al-Shabaab rebels killed in air raid

Ten al-Shabaab fighters have been killed in a Kenyan air raid on the southern Somali town of Jilib.

Mogadishu - Ten al-Shabaab rebels were killed in a Kenyan air raid on the southern Somali town of Jilib on Sunday, the military said, as the East African nation fights to rid Somalia of the al-Qaeda-linked militants.

Kenya moved its troops into Somalia in mid-October in pursuit of Somali insurgents it blames for a series of kidnappings on Kenyan soil and frequent assaults on its security forces in the border province of North Eastern.

Residents and officials told Reuters earlier on Sunday that at least 12 civilians were killed when two Kenyan jets bombed Jilib.

“Intelligence reached us that they were there and we carried out an opportunistic strike. We killed 10 al-Shabaab fighters and there was no collateral damage,” Emmanuel Chirchir, the Kenyan military spokesperson, told Reuters on the phone.

Chirchir said al Shabaab was spreading propaganda by claiming that civilians and children had been killed in the raid. He said a senior official of the group was killed in an earlier strike on the port of Kismayu, a few days ago.

“The jets bombarded two places, an al-Shabaab base and a nearby IDP camp,” Hassan Abdiwahab, a resident in Jilib, 120 km (74 miles) north of the port of Kismayu, told Reuters.

An al-Shabaab leader in the town said the five bombs dropped by the planes hit a bus stop, the IDP camp and an area just outside of the town.

A top official of the group, Sheikh Muktar Robow Abu Mansoor, on Thursday urged al-Shabaab followers to attack Kenya with “huge blasts” in retaliation for the campaign that is being carried out jointly with Somali government troops.

The call followed two grenade attacks in the capital Nairobi that killed one person and injured at least 20 on Monday. Unidentified militants also carried out two attacks on vehicles in the remote northern Kenya.

Mohammud Farah, spokesperson for the Ras Kamboni militia that is allied to the Somali Transitional Federal Government, said they seized a four-by-four vehicle laden with explosives that was headed to Kenya.

“Our forces in patrol found the car 8km away from the town on its way to Kenya and we have discovered different types of explosive materials in the car,” Farah told Reuters from Dhobley town, which is close to the border.

The vehicle was carrying 10 passengers, four of whom were identified as al-Shabaab fighters, he added.

Kenya said on Saturday it was committed to withdrawal from Somalia once it is satisfied that it has stripped the al Qaeda-linked group's capacity to carry out attacks across the border.

Although the Kenyan chief of defence forces said his troops had chased al-Shabaab from the whole of Gedo region, the two-week old campaign has been slowed considerably by heavy rains.

Chirchir said the intense rains had started to abate, allowing Kenyan forces to plan an offensive of Afmadow in Lower Juba region, where al-Shabaab has been digging in after reinforcing with fighters from other areas.

“Now that the rains have subsided, the taking of Afmadow is likely. It should be very soon,” he said.

Two Ugandan soldiers were injured on Saturday when African Union troops came under an al-Shabaab attack in Mogadishu.

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma and Tanzania's President Jakaya Kikwete expressed their support for Kenya's military action in Somalia, the Kenyan presidency said in a statement from Perth, Australia, where President Mwai Kibaki was attending the Commonwealth summit. - Reuters

Reds to face Chelsea in League Cup

Liverpool have been drawn to face Chelsea in the League Cup quarter-finals.

|||

London – Liverpool will play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge twice in just over a week after the two Premier League teams were drawn to face each other in the quarter-finals of the English League Cup on Saturday.

They are scheduled to meet at the Bridge in a Premier League match on November 20 with the League Cup tie, a repeat of the 2005 final which Chelsea won 3-2, taking place in the week commencing November 28.

Liverpool, who have won the competition a record seven times, won 2-1 at Stoke City in the fourth round on Wednesday while Chelsea won by the same score at Everton on the same night.

Arsenal, last season's beaten finalists, will entertain current league leaders Manchester City in another high profile match at the Emirates and Manchester United were handed the relatively easy task of a home tie against Crystal Palace, who are fourth in the Championship (second division).

They last met in the league in the 2004-05 season when United also beat Palace 2-0 in the League Cup, their fifth win over the south London side in the competition in their five meetings.

The other tie will be between Championship side Cardiff City, enjoying their best run in the League Cup for 46 years, and Blackburn Rovers, who knocked out Newcastle United 4-3 after extra time this week, but are currently bottom of the Premier League. – Reuters

Who Will Marry Our Pastor?s Daughter? (III)

IF Brother Okon felt he had prepared for the bombardment of questions members of the marriage committee would hurl at him, such feeling had been clearly deceptive. Elder Obi fired a flaming salvo. Okon looked at the unsmiling face before him and fidgeted. It was a hit below his Christian belt.

The previous Sunday, Pastor John had announced to the church the formation of a board of elders who would critically examine marital intentions. He had become inundated with cases of several youths eager to ?fly? into matrimony. He was sure he would need assistance.

The youths, so concerned, had no problem with the new idea. It was just another addition to the many committees that made up the church: the most interesting being ?The Late Comers Discouragement Squad?, LCDS. (You won?t believe it.) It was a group that had the mandate to look into the menace of lateness among members, proffer far-reaching solutions and present a white paper to the pastor within a two-month period. (You didn?t say haba! did you?)

Their problem started when Pastor John included Elder Obi among the committee members. Elder Obi!!! They knew him. They knew his wife. They also knew the questions, which many times, in their minds, they asked: ?How does his wife cope with him?? Now they ask: ?How did he make the list??

Brother Okon knew there was no evading the question. He had to answer it. If he said yes or no, Elder Obi?s next turnings could jeopardise his dreams of marrying the beautiful sister of his dreams. At once, his past and future pinched his skin rudely.

Brother Okon reached a hand into his pocket, pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the sweat off his face.

Next week.

Brazil not ready to host WC - Pele

Brazil is not yet ready to host the 2014 World Cup, football great Pele told the ESPN Soccernet website in an interview.

|||

Sao Paulo – Brazil is not yet ready to host the 2014 World Cup, football great Pele told the ESPN Soccernet website in an interview posted on Friday.

According to Pele, chaotic organisation and communication difficulties are the biggest problems facing Brazil as it prepares for the World Cup.

“Brazil is not ready,” Pele said. “Not yet, it is not ready. The biggest problem, I think, is the organisation, that is a big problem, so too is the communications.”

But despite his fears, Pele said he was confident all “will run smoothly” by the time the World Cup gets under way.

“I am now working directly with the president of Brazil who is doing her best to help out with the organisation,” he said.

In July, President Dilma Rousseff named Pele the honorary ambassador for the World Cup. At the time, he criticised delays in building stadiums and other infrastructure.

Pele spoke to ESPN on Wednesday, the same day that Brazil's sports minister Orlando Silva resigned amid corruption allegations. He was the sixth minister forced out of Rousseff's government. Four of the others had also faced corruption allegations.

A recent government report on Brazil's preparations for the World Cup said that as of September, renovation work had not begun on five of the 13 airports that will be used during the tournament.

The report also said that seven of the 12 host cities have not begun other infrastructure work, and only nine of the nearly 50

transportation projects planned for the tournament were under way.

Earlier this month former Brazil striker Romario, now a congressman, told Agencia Brasil, the government's news agency:

“Maybe because of politics, work which was supposed to be halfway done hasn't even started.”

The government, however, does not seem worried about the apparent lack of progress and is confident that everything will eventually get done. Officials also dismiss the notion Brazil is not doing enough.

“Brazil is doing the necessary work for the World Cup and there are no signs that deadlines will be missed,” the Sports Ministry's media office said in a recent e-mail to The Associated Press. – Sapa-AP
