Werder Bremen central defender Per Mertesacker is negotiating a possible move to a foreign club and has been given a day off international duties.
|||Berlin - Werder Bremen central defender Per Mertesacker is negotiating a possible move to a foreign club and has been given a day off international duties to hold talks, Germany coach Joachim Loew said on Tuesday.
German media have reported Mertesacker could be close to a transfer to Arsenal, who were crushed 8-2 by Manchester United on Sunday, but Werder have refused to comment.
“Last night I told the player I am giving you a free day and I expect he will come back this evening. I know there was a specific offer from a club,” Loew told reporters as his side prepared for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Austria.

The Sudanese armed forces have carried out deadly air raids on civilians in rebel-held areas of the Nuba Mountains
|||The Sudanese armed forces have carried out deadly air raids on civilians in rebel-held areas of the Nuba Mountains that may amount to war crimes, two leading human rights groups said on Tuesday.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said that during a week-long visit to the region their researchers saw almost daily bombing raids by government aircraft on villages and farmland.
On August 14, an air strike near the village of Kurchi, 70 kilometres (45 miles) east of the South Kordofan state capital Kadugli, destroyed the home and possessions of Wazir al-Kharaba, the rights groups said.
On August 19, the researchers photographed three bombs falling from an Antonov aircraft near Kurchi, and on August 22 another air strike seriously wounded a man in the leg and an elderly woman in the jaw and damaged a school.
The rights groups said that the researchers had investigated a total of 13 air strikes in the Kauda, Delami and Kurchi areas which had killed at least 26 civilians and wounded more than 45 since mid-June.
No evident military targets were visible near any of the air strike locations the researchers visited.
“The relentless bombing campaign is killing and maiming civilian men, women and children, displacing tens of thousands, putting them in desperate need of aid and preventing entire communities from planting crops and feeding their children,” said Human Rights Watch's Africa director Daniel Bekele.
Amnesty's senior crisis response adviser Donatella Rovera said:
“The international community, and particularly the UN Security Council, must stop looking the other way and act to address the situation.
“Indiscriminate attacks in civilian areas and restrictions on humanitarian aid could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
The research team completed its visit before the announcement by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on August 23 of a unilateral two-week ceasefire by government forces.
But the rights watchdogs said that reports from on the ground suggested that the government was continuing to bomb civilian areas.
South Kordofan remained part of the north when South Sudan became independent last month and fighters from the state's indigenous Nuba peoples who fought alongside southern forces in the 1983-2005 civil war have been locked in conflict with government troops since early June.
On Thursday, Washington urged the rebels, now renamed the Sudan People's Liberation Army-North, to reciprocate the truce announced by the government and clear the way for talks on the future of both South Kordofan and Blue Nile, another former southern rebel stronghold in the north.
But the same day, campaign group the Enough Project quoted reliable sources as reporting a government air raid near the South Kordofan town of Ungarto. - Sapa-AFP

Tshwane MMC for transport, George Matjila, and eight others were released on a warning and the case has been postponed.
|||The assault case against the Tshwane Metro Council’s mayoral committee member for transport, George Matjila, and eight others has been postponed to next month.
The nine accused were released on warning by the Temba Magistrate’s Court.
Matjila, who is branch chairman of Ward 13 – incorporating Hammanskraal and surrounding areas – was arrested on Sunday morning after accusations of assault were levelled against him by branch members, some of them members of the ANC and the ANC Youth League.
He appeared in court with Doctor Makou, Andries Dinale, Samson Makotyane, Hans Mutwa, Silinga Donko Kabini, Puleng Malala, Jackie Mawela and Daniel Mojela.
Ward 95 branch member Anthony Hlongwane alleges he was assaulted by Matjila and five men at a meeting on Saturday. Hlongwane was allegedly struck with stones and bottles, while other branch members fled, escaping the assault.
Hlongwane was admitted to the Jubilee Hospital near Temba. He was discharged on Sunday morning. He filed a complaint of assault against Matjila and eight others at the Temba police station.
Tensions have been rising in the region before an ANC conference next month at which the leadership of the chairman and Tshwane executive mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, is to be challenged.
Matjila could also face internal charges by the council, with a chance of his losing his job as a mayoral committee member if he is found guilty.
A well-known supporter of Ramokgopa, he has been accused of trying to influence delegates to support a push for the executive mayor to serve a second term as the regional chairman.
Matjila is accused of having imposed his brother-in-law as the councillor for Ward 95, although the man does not live in the ward. This has led to a community outcry.
The metro council has thrown its full weight behind Matjila.
It said his arrest was unfortunate, but the council would employ the “innocent until proved guilty” principle.
Council spokesman Pieter de Necker said: “The executive mayor will address the matter… he has scheduled a meeting with Matjila.”
That Matjila had been released on warning by the court meant he had not been found guilty of anything and there were no obvious sanctions against him, De Necker said.
Matjila’s supporters crammed into the courtroom on Monday, prompting the magistrate to adjourn the case twice while order was restored.
Outside the court, Matjila was given a hero’s welcome.
His supporters surrounded him and tried to prevent the media from taking pictures.

"My relationship with the president of the ANC has always been organisational, and that's how we continue to relate".
|||ANCYL leader Julius Malema does not have a personal relationship with President Jacob Zuma and does not want one, he said on Monday ahead of his disciplinary hearing.
“I've never had a relationship with the president of the ANC personally,” Malema told reporters in the foyer of ANC headquarters in Johannesburg.
“My relationship with the president of the ANC has always been organisational, and that's how we continue to relate... there is no bad blood.”
Malema would appear before the ANC's disciplinary committee on Tuesday and his spokesman Floyd Shivambu on Wednesday. League deputy president Ronald Lamola, secretary general Sindiso Magaqa, his deputy Kenetswe Mosenogi and treasurer general Pule Mabe were expected to appear before the committee later in the week.
The charges include bringing the ANC into disrepute and sowing divisions in ANC ranks.
Malema recently said the ANCYL would send a team to Botswana to consolidate local opposition parties and help bring about regime change, as it believed the government there was “in full co-operation with imperialists” and undermining the “African agenda”.
The ANC publicly rebuked the league, which then apologised.
Malema said senior advocate and ANC member Patric Mtshaulana
would represent him at the disciplinary hearing.
Reports he had approached ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe and ANC treasurer Mathews Phosa to represent the youth league leaders were false, he said.
Phosa had endured a “huge attack” for representing Malema during his disciplinary hearing last year, and the league did not want to put him through that again, Malema said.
“We felt we needed to save this leadership and avoid putting them through another painful process. If you are about to go down you don't have to go down with everybody.
“Reliable forces of the revolution must remain and continue with the struggle. It is sometimes very unstrategic to take all forces into a battlefield and there is nobody left if you get killed.”
ANC officials met on Monday to discuss processes relating to the disciplinary hearing and standing traditions, secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said in a statement.
“They further re-affirmed that any person going through the disciplinary process itself of the African National Congress, must subject himself or herself to such a process, and any issues or matters that relate to the process must be submitted to the disciplinary process,” he said.
Malema said the youth league was taking responsibility for its actions.
“We are prepared for anything... we've always said the ANC is in charge of our future and if the ANC defines your future as expulsion, you need to accept that is the fate the movement has decided for you.”
Even if the leadership was dissolved the league's resolutions on nationalisation and expropriation without compensation would not change, said Malema.
“This leadership has taken decisions, the congress has resolved on these issues. Whether you expel us or don't expel us, these resolutions will never change... like it or not we defeated you... we resolved on nationalisation and we won conference fair and square.”
Malema said the league's national office had not asked its provincial branches to send supporters to Johannesburg.
“We are not bussing people in. Those who come to pledge support should do so with restraint and show maximum levels of discipline,” said Malema.
“Peace and unity should prevail until the conclusion. We are disciplined members of the organisation (ANC) and respect the leadership.”
On Monday afternoon there was still no sign of ANCYL supporters outside Luthuli House. Gauteng police said they were prepared for any eventuality. -

Gauteng police are prepared for any eventuality ahead of the ANCYL president's disciplinary hearing at Luthuli House.
|||Gauteng police were prepared for any eventuality ahead of ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's disciplinary hearing on Tuesday.
“Police and other law enforcement agencies will be taking precautionary measures to make sure that there will be no disruptions in the city centre and surroundings to Luthuli House,” Liutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said in a statement.
“Lawlessness will not be tolerated. Certain streets leading to the city centre and surroundings to the Luthuli House may be affected and members of the Johannesburg metro police will be on the ground to make sure that traffic runs smoothly.”
Dlamini said law enforcement agencies considered the intended gathering of supporters prohibited, because “no application was received in terms of the Gatherings Act”.
Malema told reporters on Monday the league would not be bussing in supporters.
African National Congress Youth League spokeswoman Magdalene Moonsamy said she could not say when and how many supporters were expected.
“It is at the discretion of the membership. If they want to arrive today (Monday), they are at liberty to do so. There are many that will be there during the night for a night vigil. They are showing support for the leadership.”
Malema faces charges alongside his spokesman, Floyd Shivambu, league deputy president Ronald Lamola, secretary general Sindiso Magaqa, his deputy Kenetswe Mosenogi and treasurer general Pule Mabe.
ANCYL national executive committee (NEC) member Lerato Mofokeng however said at the weekend the league still called for a freer and more democratic society in Botswana. She indicated the youth movement's apology in this regard was meant more for the “media”, and that the movement stood by its statement.
Initially only Malema and Shivambu were charged, but the four other leaders' names were added to the charge sheet last week.
The league was reportedly hoping to argue in Malema's defence that he was communicating a resolution of the ANCYL's NEC, and therefore the entire body should be charged, not just the president.
Last year, Malema pleaded guilty in an ANC disciplinary hearing after he publicly criticised President Jacob Zuma. The ANC's disciplinary committee at the time said should Malema be found guilty of provoking serious divisions or a break-down of the organisation's unity within the next two years, his ANC membership would be suspended. -

The JSE has opened higherand ahead of a speech by US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke later in the day.
|||The JSE opened higher on Friday, bouncing back a touch from the sell-off activity on Thursday, and ahead of a speech by Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke later in the day.
A local trader said that a choppy day is expected within a tight range. News of a possible German downgrade shook investors somewhat on Thursday, and poor US jobless data did nothing to help sentiment. The local market is shaking off some of the negatives that had sent it down on Thursday, he said.
By 09:14 local time, the JSE all-share index was up 0.38%, with the gold index up 2.07%. Platinum counters gained 0.66%, while industrials lifted 0.37%. Banks made 0.66% and financials picked up 0.35%. The resources index was up 0.47%.
The rand was bid at 7.21 to the dollar, from 7.22 at the JSE's close on Wednesday. Gold was trading at US$1,777.05 a troy ounce from US$1,737.15 at the JSE's previous close, while platinum was at US$1,821.50/oz, from US$1,814.50/oz previously.
Dow Jones Newswires reported that European stocks are expected to start mixed and the session will likely be volatile as investors wait nervously for Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke to speak at the Jackson Hole economic symposium at 16:00 SA time on Friday.
Markets have increasingly been expecting Bernanke to announce or even hint at some intervention into the US economy, following several weeks of disappointing economic data.
Several European governments extended their ban on short selling of financial shares late Thursday. Spain, Italy and France are extending restrictions which would have ended at the close of business Friday. But German officials denied they would be joining in and introducing bans on short selling as did the UK regulator.
Asian stocks were mixed on Friday. At local time, Japan's Nikkei Stock Average was 0.29% higher and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was down 0.16%.
In Tokyo, stocks and the yen shrugged off news that Prime Minister Naoto Kan had announced his resignation as head of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan on Friday, with traders saying the move was widely-expected.
On the JSE, Anglo American (AGL) shed 6 cents to 272 rand, while BHP Billiton (BIL) gained 4 cents to 229.49 rand and Sasol (SOL) collected 1.65 rand to 308.25 rand.
Among gold shares, Anglogold Ashanti (ANG) rose 6.52 rand or 2.07% to 322.02 rand and Gold Fields (GFI) lifted 1.85 rand or 1.62% to 115.84 rand.
Harmony (HAR) was up 2.32 rand or 2.57% to 92.52 rand.
Among platinum stocks, Anglo American Platinum (AMS) was 3.50 rand lower at 558.83 rand but Impala Platinum gathered 3.48 rand or 2.10% to 168.98 rand. Northam Platinum (NHM) was down 40 cents, or 1.18%, to 33.60 rand.
Kumba Iron Ore (KIO) lifted 6.91 rand or 1.57% to 447.94 rand.
In the telecoms sector, Altech (ALT) dropped 1.05 rand, or 1.75%, to 58.95 rand.
Amongst the retailers, Shoprite (SHP) garnered 1.45 rand, or 1.42% to 103.75 rand, and Woolworths (WHL) picked up 37 cents, or 1.13% to 32.97 rand. - I-Net Bridge
