Gaborone, Botswana - Michelle Obama on Friday began the second leg of her weeklong visit to Africa by wielding a brush to help paint a mural at a clinic that treats HIV and Aids infected children.

The disease is a major public health challenge in Botswana, a country of 2 million people, including about 300 000 HIV and Aids carriers.

The first lady is promoting health and wellness on her visit, with a special emphasis on Aids prevention.

Her first stop upon arrival was at the clinic in the capital of Gaborone that is sponsored by Baylor University. The clinic serves 4 000 children and their families.

Mrs Obama and family members traveling with her helped paint a mural on the wall of a new facility under construction.

The first lady then headed to lunch with women leaders from different generations.

She also planned a brief drop-in on President Ian Khama before taking the family to dinner at a nature park.

Mrs Obama flew to Botswana from Cape Town, South Africa, on Friday morning. She, her daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, 10, were welcomed with a performance of traditional African dances performed a group of children ages 6 to 18. The children wore traditional costumes of hide and what looked like zebra skin and shells around their ankles. They clapped and sang, “Obama Ye-Le-Le.”

She also greeted a separate group of children waving the American flag and the blue and black flag of Botswana.

The first lady's mission began last Monday in South Africa. She returns Monday to the White House.

Mrs Obama had dinner Thursday in Cape Town with her friend, media mogul Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey was in South Africa to accept an honorary degree from the University of the Free State. - Sapa-AP

Leadership debate not planned - Vavi

Zwelinzima Vavi says Cosatu will not be discussing the leadership of the ANC at its committee meeting in Midrand.

|||

Johannesburg - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will not be discussing the leadership of the African National Congress at its 5th Central Executive Committee, secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi said on Sunday.

“Cosatu has not discussed any succession or who we are going to support,” he said at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

“It’s cagey to open discussions on leadership too early.”

There was still 18 months until the ANC's elective conference in 2012.

Vavi said the right time to start talking about the nominations for the leadership would be four months before the conference.

However, the central committee would be assessing the leadership.

At the last central committee meeting in 2007 Cosatu had taken a resolution to form an alliance pact.

Vavi said those alliance relations were going to be discussed during the four-day central committee meeting.

The alliance was in a “better place”, he said.

“We are coming out of a local government election where we showed unity.

“We fared well (in the election) because of it.”

He said the committee meeting would be discussing a number of policies and work-related issues. One of the points of the discussion was going to be Walmart.

On Sunday, six days after Walmart completed its acquisition of a controlling stake in Massmart, it started advertising price cuts and new business opportunities for South Africa with an eight-page colour advertisement in the Sunday Times newspaper.

In the advert, Walmart said it intended creating 15 000 jobs in the next five years.

Vavi said it was premature for Walmart advertisement was premature.

“They are pulling the wool over our eyes... The cost to the economy is going to be massive,” he said.

Vavi was at Gallagher Estate on Sunday to check that everything was ready for the four-day central committee meeting.

“We are ready. It's all systems go,” he said. - Sapa

Arsenal turned down a bid from Barcelona for captain Cesc Fabregas, according to media reports.

London – Arsenal turned down a bid from Barcelona for captain Cesc Fabregas, according to media reports on Friday.

According to the Sun and the Telegraph, the London club rejected a 27-million-pound (43.2-million-dollar) offer out of hand.

Barca's move is not unexpected, after they had a bid for the midfielder rejected last summer.

“(Manager Pep) Guardiola knows the values of players and Cesc's is less than 40 (million) euros (57 million dolars),” Barcelona president Sandro Rosell said.

“Barcelona will offer less and, if they don't accept, then he won't come.” – Sapa-dpa
