EU ditches Gaddafi for opposition

The European Union is no longer prepared to negotiate with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The European Union stated Friday that it was no longer prepared to negotiate with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and would instead hold talks with his opponents, who are based in the eastern city of Benghazi.

“(Gaddafi's) regime has lost all legitimacy and is no longer an interlocutor for the EU,” read a declaration agreed upon by all 27

EU leaders at an emergency summit in Brussels.

“The European Union welcomes and encourages the interim transitional national council based in Benghazi, which it considers a political interlocutor,” the statement said.

France had already said Thursday that it recognised the Benghazi movement as a legitimate representative of the Libyan people. Other EU leaders stressed that they recognise states, not governments, but expressed willingness to talk with the opposition movement. -
