The PSL and Safa are playing the ‘blame game’ after clubs complained that they were not informed their players were called up to train with Bafana Bafana.
|||Eight players named to train with the Bafana Bafana squad on Tuesday morning had not been informed of their selection by late afternoon, a day before they were scheduled to assemble for the camp in Rustenburg.
Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane announced a 24-man squad to play Egypt in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations tie next week, and an additional eight locally-based players were included as part of the national set-up.
They would train with the squad from Thursday to Sunday before being released back to their clubs when the seven overseas players link up with the side.
The eight players included Ajax Cape Town's George Maluleka, the Bloemfontein Celtic duo of Eric Mathoho and Hlompho Kekana, Happy Jele and Mark Mayambela from Orlando Pirates, Lehlohonolo Majoro from AmaZulu and Santos' Vuyisile Wana.
Ajax chief executive George Comitis said the club had not been informed of Maluleka's inclusion, although they had been informed of the inclusion of Thulani Serero in the squad to face Egypt.
“I'm not aware of Maluleke being called up even though I did receive a letter for Serero's selection,” Comitis said.
Ironically, Serero was embroiled in a call-up confusion last November for the friendly match against the United States in Cape Town. He was withdrawn from the squad because of “injury” even though he featured for the national Under-23 side in the game's curtain-raiser.
Celtic's communications manager, Petros Augousti, said they had also not been informed of Mathoho and Kekana's inclusion in the training squad, but would not comment further.
“I obviously can't comment on that, but we have not received anything,” he said.
All eight players were set to be in Premiership action on Wednesday night, and were expected to assemble in Johannesburg after the match. They would then depart for their training base in Rustenburg on Thursday morning.
“The letters were sent out by the association,” said Morio Sanyane, the head of the SA Football Association (Safa) communications department.
“Standard practice is that we send out letters to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) who then inform the clubs about call-ups and logistics, but we are still hopeful that the players will meet.”
According to the PSL's assistant manager, Jonathan Schloss, letters were sent to the eight players' clubs.
“As far as I know we did send letters to the clubs today but we will have to check to see what happened,” Schloss said. – Sapa
