Panicked drunk attacked police visiting house

A MAN assaulted two police officers who had been called to his home along with an ambulance crew.

When Robert Seabridge started behaving in an odd manner his brother became concerned and telephoned the ambulance service but they would not come to the property without police backup.

Heather Chamberlain, prosecuting, told North Staffordshire Magistrates' Court: "When the police and ambulance did arrive the defendant was seen sitting on the toilet upstairs with no top on and with his head in his hands."

She said when the police officers tried to talk to Seabridge he picked up a six foot clothes airer and threw it at them. Eventually he was wrestled to the ground but was still able to throw punches which hit both officers, causing them pain and discomfort.

Miss Chamberlain said when the defendant was interviewed he said he suffered from anxiety and could not remember much of what had happened because he was panicking. She said he told police officers that he was horrified by his own behaviour.

Seabridge, aged 21, of Robert Heath Street, Smallthorne, who had no previous convictions admitted two offences of assault on police officers on December 18 this year.

Angela Trafford, defending, said her client wanted to apologise to the two officers.

She told the court yesterday: "He had taken anti-depressants and drunk 12 pints of lager.

"When the police and ambulance arrived he was frightened that he would be taken away and did not want to go to prison."

Miss Trafford said that since the incident her client had sought medical help and assessment for his problems but has now been referred back to his own GP.

The magistrates imposed a conditional discharge for 12 months on the defendant and told him to pay court costs of 85.
