A GROUP which supports voluntary organisations in Notts is encouraging more of them to take on apprentices – by employing one themselves.
The group, Enable, is leading by example having employed Laura Allen last year.
And both the company and Laura are now reaping the rewards.
Laura started work at Enable's city centre base in February 2010.
She has recently gained her NVQ Level 2 in business and administration and, having now been taken on full-time, is currently working towards her Level 3.
Chief executive Don Hayes said he hoped voluntary organisations would follow suit.
He said: "We believe that voluntary organisations should consider taking on apprentices in their offices and we have been encouraging our members to do so.
"A lot of people don't realise it but the voluntary sector is a huge employer and it has very few young people and apprentices. We are keen to change that.
"With that in mind, we believed we had to put our money where our mouth is and take one on ourselves."
Mr Hayes added: "Having apprentices is a big advantage. You can train them up to the levels that your business requires.
"These young people are enthusiastic, which brings a lot to the business."
Enable works with dozens of voluntary organisations across Notts.
It helps in the sharing of information makes sure the organisations have the right infrastructure and meets other needs they have.
Laura, 20, of Bestwood Park, now works as a contract monitoring officer.
She helps to make sure the paperwork which is sent in to Enable by organisations is completed properly.
She said: "I really enjoy the work that I do. I have found that being able to learn while doing the job has been a major advantage.
"I have been taught how things run in the voluntary sector. I'm really glad how it has all worked out.
"I'm now aiming to do a Level 3 NVQ, which involves me evaluating my own work more."
Laura is one of thousands of people across Notts who have benefited from doing an apprenticeship.
But the Nottingham Post wants more to benefit. With the Derbyshire and Notts Chamber of Commerce and the National Apprenticeship Service, we have been running the 100 in 100 campaign.
We set out to find 100 apprentice posts but, having hit that target, are now chasing 150 before the 100 days are up.
Laura added: "I am really pleased I did the apprenticeship."
