A DRINK-DRIVER jailed for five years for a crash that killed his friend was probably "showing off" his new car, a court heard.
Samuel Montgomery lost control of his Ford Fiesta just outside Stafford. The vehicle ploughed through a field and hit a tree killing rear-seat passenger, 21-year-old Daniel Reynolds, who was not wearing a seatbelt.
Two women in the car were seriously injured.
Nick Burn, prosecuting, told Stafford Crown Court that blood tests later showed Montgomery was more than one-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit with a reading of 130 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres. The legal limit is 80.
Montgomery, aged 23, of Dart Avenue, Stafford, admitted a charge of causing Daniel's death by careless driving having consumed excess alcohol.
Judge Michael Challinor also banned Montgomery from driving for seven years and ordered him to take an extended test before getting his licence back.
The judge told him: "Young and relatively inexperienced drivers who drink in to the early hours of the morning must stay off the roads. This was bad driving which was not just careless, but fell little short of being dangerous."
