Prison officer spared jail after caught smuggling cannabis

A PRISON officer has been spared jail after a court heard how he smuggled in cannabis to two prisoners in his boxer shorts.

Thomas Marshall, 20, confessed after a sniffer dog detected drugs on him during a routine search when he arrived at work at Lowdham Grange on March 22.

Nottingham Crown Court heard today that although Marshall did not have any drugs on him at that time, he told them how he had been smuggling in cannabis in his boxer shorts.

At Nottingham Crown Court he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supplying cannabis.

Judge James Sampson gave him a one-year prison sentence suspended for 18 months and 300 hours of unpaid work. He will be subject to a six-month curfew.

Judge Sampson said he had no doubt that Marshall was naive, immature and vulnerable, and at the time of the offence totally out of his depth.

"At your age and with your personality, you should never have been exposed to category A prisoners," he said. "You could not withstand the pressure."

The court was told in mitigation that he had been bullied at school and had gone from working at Co-op to overseeing long-term prisoners at Lowdham Grange in Old Epperstone Road.

When he agreed to bringing in cannabis, for which he was paid, he had been caught at a weak moment and agreed to smuggle the drug.

A second prisoner had also approached him and he had brought those drugs in again in his boxer shorts.

The total amount he was paid was 1,600.
