Illegal migrants from northern Africa pelted police officers and soldiers with stones and other objects when a protest against detention center conditions escalated into violence.

Officials say 15 officers, three soldiers and one migrant were injured on Tuesday at a center housing 217 recent arrivals who fled unrest in northern Africa. The center on Malta, an island nation south of Italy, includes several buildings surrounded by a barbed wire fence.

The protest began peacefully when two migrants climbed onto one of the fences after their application for humanitarian protection was rejected. Others joined and violence flared when migrants started throwing stones at riot police dispatched to control the situation. Officials say 23 face charges. - Sapa-AP
