Bafana in trouble after defeat

Bafana Bafana lost to Niger in Niamey, making life very difficult for the South Africans in their qualifying campaign.

Niger blew Group G of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tournament wide open with a 2-1 win over South Africa in Niamey on Sunday.

The West Africans, who scored their goals through Koffi Dankwa and Ouwo Maazou, have jumped to the top of the standings on nine points, though South Africa and Sierra Leone (who beat Egypt 2-1 on Saturday) are still very much in the race to win the group with eight points apiece.

The final round of qualifiers in early October see Niger play away to Egypt – who have been eliminated from the running and will in all likelihood use a youthful team – while South Africa host Sierra Leone.

In Niamey, South Africa almost took an early lead through Teko Modise’s shot that hit the woodwork, but it was Niger who drew first blood when Dankwa headed home from a corner kick after being left unmarked.

The West Africans had chances to extend their lead in the first half but had to wait until just after the restart in the second stanza to go 2-0 up, with the dangerous Maazou scoring from close range after more substandard defending from the visitors.

Bafana Bafana pulled one back through midfielder Andile Jali, but Mena were able to hold out for the remainder of the match and secure a vital win that moves them one step closer to a first ever appearance in the Nations Cup finals.
