Nairobi/Johannesburg - Kenyan security forces have started a manhunt in a region near the border with Somalia, after a British tourist was killed and his wife kidnapped, local media reported on Monday.

Gunmen on Sunday raided a tourist resort in Kiwayu, in the eastern part of the country along the Indian Ocean coast, and shot dead a British national and abducted his wife.

“So far we are treating it as a bandit attack. We've not linked it to terrorism. We've not received any hint pointing at a terror group,” Kenyan Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere was quoted as saying by the Nation newspaper.

Initial investigations indicated that the victim, identified as David Tebbut, resisted before he was shot dead. The attackers appeared to have wanted both tourists as hostages.

The resort was not reachable for comment and its website carried a message saying: “Sorry the website is unavailable due to the tragic events. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected family.

” The couple were believed to have been the only tourists staying at Kiwayu Safari Village.

“They (gunmen) may contact us demanding for a ransom. Maybe they are from Somalia but we cannot be certain,” Iteere said.

Southern Somalia is mostly controlled by the al-Qaeda linked al-Shabaab militia and the weak central government in Mogadishu has little power to extend its authority to the region. - Sapa-dpa
