The former metro police chief has been sentenced to two years in prison [effective immediately] for drunken driving.
|||Former Ekhuruleni metro police chief Robert McBride has been sentenced to two years in prison [effective immediately] for drunken driving, EWN reported Thursday.
McBride also received a five-year suspended sentence for defeating the ends of justice and Pretoria Magistrate Peet Johnson also suspended his licence for 18 months.
This means that McBride would serve two years in prison immediately and should he defeat the ends of justice the suspended sentence would come into effect.
The sentencing brought an end to a trial that began in 2006 after McBride crashed a state-owned vehicle on the R511 following a Christmas party.
He was drunk at the time but claimed that his colleague Stanley Sagathevan, was driving the vehicle.
Magistrate Johnson slammed McBride by saying he had an over-inflated ego and a total disregard for the law.
He added that McBride was arrogant, abused his position as Metro police chief and was overall an evil man.
