Scaffolding firm takes on 15 apprentices as part of Post campaign

A SCAFFOLDING training firm has pledged to take on 15 new apprentices in support of the Nottingham Post's 100 in 100 campaign.

Safety and Access Ltd, of Bulwell, is looking for the apprentices to start in March.

It is the latest of a number of local firms which are offering apprentice roles since the start of the 100 in 100 campaign.

The apprentices will be trained over 18 months on how to put together scaffolding on different structures at the company's base in the Blenheim Industrial Estate.

They will also have the chance to work for local companies who are associated with Safety and Access.

"We are involved in training people and have companies coming to us for scaffolders," said Sarah Cockell, of the firm.

"They get their training here in two-week blocks before going to work on site for different companies."

The company already has 15 apprentices, who started last September.

They have been so pleased with their success, they have now decided to offer more places. The courses are supported by West Notts College in Mansfield.

"Those who started last year have done really well," added Ms Cockell. "We feel apprenticeships are a great way of teaching people roles and getting them into work.

"We had noticed that in the scaffolding industry, there was a lack of younger people. Many were in their 40s or 50s, so we wanted to train up some teenagers and other youngsters.

"Some of those who are with us left school without any GCSEs so it really has changed their lives, which is great to see."

Riki Leverton, 21, of Beeston, is one of those currently on the apprenticeship. He works for RAUK Scaffolding in Woodborough.

He said: "I really enjoy what I do. I like being able to go on site and learn a lot from that.

Hopefully I can carry on working with it after my course."

Tom Raynor, 16, of Bestwood, also works for the same firm. He said: "It is really good. I would urge anyone thinking about doing an apprenticeship to get involved."

Simon Raynor, who employs the apprentices at RAUK, said: "We come to Safety and Access to get apprentices. They do really well for us.

"Apprenticeships are a great way of getting new staff and training them up properly, especially in safety."

The 100 in 100 campaign was launched by the Post last month.

Together with the Notts and Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce and the National Apprenticeship Service, we are looking to identify 100 apprentice places in 100 days.
