AN ELDERLY couple had to leave their home in the middle of the night after arsonists targeted an empty house next door.
The couple, who have not been named, were woken by neighbour Richard Wood who had been walking his dogs in Shannon Road, Goldenhill, when he saw flames coming from an end-terrace bungalow.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at around 3am yesterday and spent three hours at the scene.
Police and fire crews are now treating the fire as arson.
Mr Wood, aged 27, who also lives in Shannon Road, and had been walking Jack Russells Patch and Tigger, said: "I'd just got back from having a few drinks in Newcastle and one of the dogs needed to go to the toilet.
"I took them out for a walk and spotted the fire.
"I could see the flames through the door and tried to wake up the couple next door. "I was banging on their front door and then their bedroom window and eventually they woke up."
Neighbour Marie Jones, aged 43, said: "I heard Richard knocking on my door at 3am asking me to ring the fire service because he didn't have a phone.
"There were flames coming through the front door.
"It would definitely have killed the couple if he hadn't gone out to walk his dogs because the smoke was so bad.
"They're very lucky."
