Johannesburg is the third most visited city in Africa and the Middle East, and the most visited Sub-Saharan city, according to a survey by MasterCard.

The MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities ranks cities by their total international visitor arrivals and the cross-border spending by these same visitors.

“The Index results show that many emerging market cities in the Middle East and Africa are showing robust growth in terms of both visitor arrivals and cross-border expenditures,” MasterCard Worldwide southern Africa area head Anna Jones said in a statement on Wednesday.

The cities measured in the region were Dubai, Cairo, Johannesburg, Tel Aviv, Casablanca, Abu Dhabi, Nairobi, Riyadh, Amman, Beirut and Tunis.

According to the index Johannesburg had three million visitors in 2011.

Dubai and Cairo were the top two cities in the Index, with 7.9 million visitors and 3.7 million visitors respectively. Tunis and Beirut took the bottom two spots with 1.7 million visitors each.

Most visitors to Johannesburg came from London, Frankfurt, Dubai, Paris and Gaborone, Jones said.

Despite featuring in the top five, Johannesburg only had a 9.9

percent increase in visitors for 2011 in comparison to 2010 and was the second-lowest in terms of growth with only 14.1 percent over the 2010/2011 period.

This could be attributed to the unusually high numbers of visitors to South Africa in 2010 for the FIFA World Cup, she said.

Emerging market cities in Asia, Middle East and Africa were shaping to play a much greater role in the global economy, said global economic advisor at MasterCard Worldwide, Yuwa Hedrick-Wong. - Sapa
