Tents were pitched in the middle of the square - the epicentre of protests that toppled president Hosni Mubarak in February - to show that some planned to stay until their demands were met.
“No to the return of police terror,” read one banner left over from Friday's protest, when 5,000 converged on the square.
It came after violent clashes this week between protesters and police in central Cairo that left 1,000 injured, amid mounting frustration with the military rulers over the pace of reform.
Protesters who first took to the streets to demand the overthrow of Mubarak, began shifting their anger towards the ruling military council, accusing it of using Mubarak-era tactics to stifle dissent.
Among the key demands are the trial of officials and police officers in abuse cases before and after the January 25 revolt, an end to military trials of civilians, an inclusive political process and freedom of expression and media.
A mass rally is planned for July 8 to keep the pressure up for reform. - Sapa-AFP
