The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is confident that its main sponsor will renew its contract next year, according to the league's chief executive, Zola Majavu.

The 2011/12 season, which starts this weekend, is the last in a R500 million five-year contract between the PSL and Absa.

“I was joking to Happy Ntshingila (Absa's head of marketing and communications) about it when we were sitting together,” Majavu said.

“But the relationship between the PSL and Absa has been a healthy one over the years.

“I'm confident that we will sit down with them in due time to discuss the way forward and start with the negotiations.”

Ntshingila was also confident the sponsorship would be renewed.

“We have been happy with our partnership and will look at sitting down with them in the near future,” Ntshingila said.

The PSL is also set to start negotiations over its television rights.

The current deal with SuperSport International, worth in the region of R1.6 billion, expires next year with tender notices already sent out.

The league confirmed at the launch of the new season on Monday that there would be some innovations and incentives in the Premiership this season.

Defending champions, Orlando Pirates, are set to wear a “champions sleeve” jersey to mark the fifth year of the PSL and Absa partnership.

Also, in an effort to keep the goals flowing in the campaign, the leading goalscorer will have the added incentive of a new car that will be presented when the season concludes in May. – Sapa
