Money was too late

ALMOST 1,500 former Notts miners whose health was damaged working at the coal-face died before receiving compensation owed to them by the Government, new figures show.

The previous Labour administration set up a compensation scheme in the late 1990s to give money to miners suffering from the chest condition chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, known as COPD.

But delays and legal discussions meant many miners never got their compensation before they died.

Department for Energy and Climate Change figures showed 1,477 miners across the city and county died before getting any compensation.

That included 304 in Ashfield, 300 in Sherwood, 281 in Mansfield, 236 in Bassetlaw, 103 in Nottingham North and around 50 in every other constituency in the city and county.

Sherwood MP Mark Spencer said: "It's tragic that people died before they saw their own situation resolved. We really need to put a line under this now and get it sorted so everyone who needs compensation gets it and so that victims and their families can move on."

Ashfield's Labour MP Gloria De Piero said: "The Labour party has done and I will do everything we can to ensure that miners get the money they are entitled to.
