MPs' expenses come to 26k

NEW expenses details show North Staffordshire and South Cheshire MPs claimed more than 26,000 over a two-month period last year to pay for their staff, constituency offices and second homes.

In a bid to increase transparency, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), which oversees expenses, will now release details of all MPs' expenditure every two months.

Stoke-on-Trent North MP Joan Walley claimed 1,581, Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Tristram Hunt claimed 2,007, while Stoke-on-Trent South MP Rob Flello claimed 4,782.

Newcastle's Paul Farrelly claimed 1,130 and Stone MP Bill Cash claimed 5,871.

Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy claimed just 63, Staffordshire Moorlands MP Karen Bradley claimed 504, Congleton MP Fiona Bruce claimed 10,052 and Crewe MP Edward Timpson claimed 640.

Figures vary because some MPs may have waited until September and October to also claim expenses incurred in previous months, while others may be waiting to make claims later in the year.

Claims, made in September and October, included those for the costs of MPs' constituency offices, made up of everything from staff wages to stationery and rent, as well as accommodation and utility bills for their second homes and travel between London and their constituency base.
