Lusaka - Three Zambian police officers were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the death of two people trampled in a stampede at a club, an official said on Wednesday.

“Three officers have been arrested but they are yet to be charged in connection with the stampede. I regret that in the early hours of this morning at around 12.25am in Mazabuka two lives were lost,” Home Affairs Minister Mkhondo Lungu told lawmakers.

He said the incident occurred during a Manchester United and Chelsea game on Tuesday shown at a club in Mazabuka about 150km south of the capital when police officers conducting routine operations of closing up bars ordered the closure of the establishment.

The patrons refused to leave the club and police threw teargas canisters into the bar. The stipulated time of closure for bars in Zambia is 11pm.

In Zambia, the English league is widely followed by soccer-crazy Zambians as opposed to their local league.

“When the patrons refused to have the bar closed, police officers decided to throw teargas canisters into the bar.

“There was a stampede with people trying to rush out of the bar. Later the bar owner reported to the police that two people were found dead at the bar,” Lungu said. - Sapa-AFP
