Nairobi - The African Union's Peace and Security Council on Tuesday condemned “abuses” in Ivory Coast, where rival forces have been battling for power after disputed November polls.

“The council deplored the loss of many lives, condemned the violation of human rights and other abuses in the context of military conflict, and reiterated the imperative of the protection of the civilian population,” a statement said.

“(The) council expressed its deep concern over the grave humanitarian consequences caused by the deterioration of the security situation... resulting from the intensification of military operations following the refusal of Mr Laurent Gbagbo to cede power,” said the statement issued after a meeting in Addis Ababa.

It went on to stress “the need for an independent investigation into the killings of civilians in Duekoue”, a town in the west of the country where several hundred people were reportedly slaughtered.

Forces loyal to Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognised winner of the November elections, last week stepped up their military operations in a bid to dislodge Gbagbo, who has refused to give up power.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Gbagbo's generals were negotiating the terms of his surrender after his rival's forces hemmed him in in a bunker at his home in the capital Abidjan. - Sapa-AFP
