President Barack Obama has named veteran diplomat Princeton Lyman as the new United States envoy for Sudan to replace Scott Gration.
|||Washington - United States President Barack Obama on Thursday named veteran diplomat and Africa specialist Princeton Lyman as the new US special envoy for Sudan to replace Scott Gration, who will become ambassador to Kenya.
Lyman will inherit the Sudan portfolio at a delicate moment, with tensions still high in the aftermath of a historic independence referendum in January which split north and south Sudan.
“With a lifetime of experience working on some of Africa's most pressing challenges, Ambassador Lyman is uniquely qualified to sustain our efforts in support of a peaceful and prosperous future for the Sudanese people,” Obama said.
“Ambassador Lyman will oversee our support for full implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, reduced tensions between north and south over the status of Abyei, the birth of an independent South Sudan on July 9, 2011, and a definitive end to the conflict in Darfur.”
“In those efforts, he has my full support and confidence.”
Obama also thanked Gration for “tireless and effective work” and noted that Lyman, a former US ambassador to South Africa, had worked with the previous special envoy in the US diplomatic push for a peaceful referendum.
Sudan Now, a group of human rights and anti-genocide organisations, welcomed the announcement, saying Lyman had “deep knowledge of Sudan” and extraordinary experience in peacemaking. - AFP
