A United Kingdom jury retired on Wednesday to consider its verdict in the trial of a swimming instructor accused of murdering his South African friend and disposing of his body.

The Press Association in the UK reported that Martin Sugden, 42, allegedly meticulously planned the killing of 29-year-old South African fitness instructor Donavan Van Lill.

The former paratrooper, of Clanville Bar, Stanton St Quintin, Wiltshire, had pleaded not guilty to a single charge of murder.

After three hours of deliberations, the jury of five men and seven women was sent home by Justice Burnett and told to return on Thursday.

During the three-week trial at Bristol Crown Court, jurors heard that Sugden held a long-standing grudge against Van Lill and had told a friend he was going to kill him.

Following Sugden's arrest, police found a macabre plan of how he was going murder him and get rid of his corpse without leaving a trace.

Van Lill was last seen alive at his home in Pewsham, Chippenham, Wilts, by his girlfriend Radka Paulovicova on March 3 last year.

The divorced father-of-two was reported missing when he failed to show up for work at the Olympiad leisure centre in Chippenham the following day.

His body has never been found.

Sugden, who worked at the same leisure centre, was arrested on March 19 when police heard of his confession a week earlier. -
