FIREFIGHTERS searched a burning house as they did not know if anyone was trapped inside.
Crews were called to the blaze in St Aidan's Street, in Tunstall, last night.
When they arrived, smoke was billowing from the terrace property and firefighters were sent inside the building to douse the flames and search for occupants.
But the resident, who had been out at the time of the blaze, returned while the crews were at work and was able to account for everyone.
Crews from Sandyford and Burslem fire stations were called at about 7.56pm.
Watch manager Des Keeling, from Sandyford, said: "When we arrived, there was smoke coming from the front door and the upstairs windows.
"We had to break the door down to get in and we sent in crews with breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet.
"We found the fire in the lounge area around the settee.
"We weren't sure if the occupier was home, but they shortly arrived and accounted for other people.
"The house is severely damaged with fire, heat and smoke affecting the whole property."
The fire did not spread to neighbouring homes.
An investigation into the cause of the blaze last night led crews to believe it was started by a 'carelessly discarded cigarette', which had landed on the sofa.
Crews left the scene at about 9.15pm.
