A 95-YEAR-OLD woman who was described as cantankerous died following a fall at a nursing home, an inquest heard.
Muriel Cardew was originally from Australia but her family left when she was only a baby. She came to England in 1919 with her father who was a minister.
She had three children and was divorced. In her later years she was cared for in a home in Sussex but her temperamental character was too much for the staff to cope with. Her family then moved her to Hilltop Manor Care Home, in Tunstall, in 2008 and she stayed there until her death on January 29.
Her son Peter Cardew, of Sneyd Green, said: "My mother was a hypochondriac and she was cantankerous.
"In the home in East Grinstead she had been verbally abusive to a young member of staff about the lack of salad cream. She had to leave but when we moved her to Hilltop they were wonderful.
"They knew how to deal with her, they said they were used to it.
"After the fall she went into her own little world.
"I was so impressed with everything Hilltop did for her, they were fantastic."
She had a fall in her room on August 20 last year and after that she did not get out of bed. She refused medication and began to refuse food and drink.
The inquest heard she had signed a 'do not resuscitate' order years earlier and did not want to be given any medical assistance in her last months.
She believed people should not be allowed to live past 85.
North Staffordshire Coroner Ian Smith recorded a verdict of accidental death.
