Compensation fuelled user's drug addiction

LONG-TERM heroin user Keith Degg has been jailed for 16 months for supplying the drug to help fund his own habit.

The 31-year-old's use of the class-A drug spiralled after he received 1,500 compensation last May, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard yesterday.

Prosecutor Paul Spratt said: "When he received the money, the amount he use increased. When the money ran out he sold heroin to a small group."

The court was told police searched Degg's address in London Road, Stoke, at 9.15am on July 10 last year and recovered 8 grams of heroin from his bedroom.

The drugs had a 27 per cent purity and a street value of between 320 and 800. Officers also recovered 145 cash, two mobile phones, cling film, and plastic gloves.

Degg accepted the drugs were his. He told police his heroin habit had spiralled up to about 350 a week, despite him being on benefits. And texts consistent with drugs supply were found on one of the phones.

Degg, of Keelings Drive, Trent Vale, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin with intent to supply on the basis he supplied the drug on a commercial footing for 10 days.

Stuart Muldoon, mitigating, said Degg had been using drugs since he was 14 but has stopped since his arrest.

Judge David Pugsley ruled Degg benefited from his offending by 945 and made a confiscation order for the available amount of 145.
