Commander Harrie Harrison said on Sunday that the ship was hijacked on Saturday.
He said the vessel was en route from the United Arab Emirates to the port of Berbera in Somalia's breakaway northern province of Somaliland. He gave no further details.
Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers Assistance Programme says the ship is called MV Jubba XX.
Piracy has grown in recent years in war-ravaged, drought-stricken Somalia.
