Lock your doors, police warn villagers

HOMEOWNERS in East Leake have been urged to lock their windows and doors after five homes were burgled in one night.

Purses, wallets and cash were taken from homes on several streets in the village.

News of the break-ins has alarmed residents of the village, which usually has a very low crime rate.

Homes in Meeting House Close, Salisbury Avenue, Potters Lane, Manor Farm Meadow and Beech Avenue were all raided.

In every case, police found the homeowners had accidently left a door unlocked.

No arrests have been made, and so far nobody has been able to provide a description of the culprit.

However, police believe he may have used a bicycle.

East Leake beat manager PC Kelly Warwick said: "It is quite concerning that the burglar was able to enter so many homes with such ease in a relatively short space of time.

"We have been out distributing crime prevention leaflets throughout the village because we want to make sure residents are aware that there are, unfortunately, opportunist thieves who will try door handles and windows on the off-chance that they are unlocked.

"As well as keeping doors and windows securely locked, it also pays to think about where items that might be tempting to a thief are kept. Don't leave purses, wallets and keys somewhere obvious and certainly don't leave them in a place where they can be seen from outside."

Anyone who has any information about the burglaries in the early hours of January 24 or thinks they know who is responsible for carrying them out is urged to call Nottinghamshire Police on 0300 300 99 99 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police hope to raise over 1.3m from building sales

POLICE want to sell buildings worth more than 1.3m to help make up for money lost in Government spending cuts.

The sale of seven police houses, five of which are occupied by officers and their families, could raise 1.2m.

And the sale of Notts Police Federation's North Lodge home, on the boundary of the force's Sherwood Lodge HQ, is expected to fetch 160,000.

The homes will be offered to the residents at market value, but if they decide not to buy, they will be given three months to leave.

Officers in England and Wales receive a housing allowance which they forego if they live in a police house.

Mick Taylor, chairman of Notts Police Federation, said it was interested in buying North Lodge.

"The force has offered accommodation in Sherwood Lodge but we would lose our independence and be restricted on meeting dates. Some of the officers we deal with, especially those injured on duty, want to receive support away from main police buildings.

"We are disappointed that it's come to this. However, we know the force needs to save money wherever it can."

On the sale of the houses, Mr Taylor added: "Anyone who has lived in those premises will know it brings home the nature of 24/7 policing.

"People who know there is an officer in their village or area are at the door asking for help.

"I think when you start closing down police houses, local policing does suffer."

The police authority meets on Wednesday at County Hall, when it will also be asked to allow the continuation of rental agreements with communication companies to site aerials, dishes and associated equipment on police-owned masts.

The annual rental income of 120,000 is the preferred option rather than a potential sale value of 750,000.

The integrated offender management team – comprising police officers and criminal justice and probation service staff – is also set to move from the Venture Centre in Worksop to a non-police building.

The move will save the drug and alcohol action team about 5,000 a year.

An ongoing review of the force's estate has already led to planned investment in 2010/11 and 2011/12 being stopped for police stations at Arnold, Eastwood, Clifton, Broxtowe, Beeston, Retford, Ollerton, Kirkby, Harworth, Hucknall, Mansfield, Worksop, and also stables at Sherwood Lodge and CCTV for custody suites.

Notts Police wants to save 45m over three years from April 2011 to cope with a 20 per cent reduction in government force spending.

Stay indoors, warns government

The government has urged all South Africans in Egypt to remain indoors until the situation there returns to normal.

|||

The government on Monday urged all South Africans who are in Egypt to remain indoors until the volatile situation in that country returns to normal.

In a statement, the department of international relations and co-operation said they should also contact the South African Embassy for updates on the situation.

It said the South African Mission in Egypt had earlier managed to meet South African citizens stranded at Cairo Airport, and a flight had been arranged for them out of the country.

“Following our intervention, all South African citizens who were at the airport are safely boarding to South Africa with the assistance of the mission.”

Government had noted with concern the events unfolding in Egypt.

“Government calls on all South Africans who are currently in Egypt to remain indoors and in their present location until the current situation returns to normal and to remain in contact with the South African Embassy for updates on the current situation.”

It said family members in South Africa could contact the department's consular section on 012-351-1000 for any help they might need.

“It is also recommended that travellers contact their airlines as well as their travel agents to verify matters of planned travel to Egypt,” the department said. - Sapa

Nottingham reapplies for Government cash to spend on improving council houses

NOTTINGHAM City Homes has reapplied for Government cash to improve and renovate council houses across the city.

It had previously been promised 91 million over the next two years to complete a programme to install windows, insulation, doors, kitchens and bathrooms.

But when the new coalition Government came to power, the council was told it needed to reapply for cash from a smaller overall pot of money.

However NCH has put in a bid which is even bigger – totalling 93m.

NCH assistant director of asset management Steve Hale said: "To be re-bidding for the money that we had previously agreed is not a situation that any council or landlord wants to be in, but that is the new criteria in which we have to operate."

The previous Government said 100 per cent of homes must be of a "decent standard". However, the new Coalition has now said only 90 per cent of council homes must meet this standard – potentially leaving a third of the city's homes which currently do not meet the standard without any improvement work.

The council would only need 67 million to bring 90 per cent of its homes up to a decent standard. But it is arguing that an extra 26 million is needed due to "extraordinary circumstances".

It hopes that this money could be found from a different pot of Government money to the 2.1 billion Decent Homes grant, which has been cut by about 1 billion by the coalition.

The "extraordinary circumstances" include improving hundreds of homes which were to be rebuilt or refurbished under the now-axed Meadows PFI programme.

However, using Government calculations, Mr Hale admitted that in the worst case scenario NCH may only be given 38 million over the next two years.

Housing minister Grant Shapps says the previous system was overly bureaucratic, and meant councils spent too much time "jumping through hoops".

Tomorrow: How political parties are joining forces over homes cash.

Plans to shut Sunday market put on hold

HANLEY'S Sunday market has been given a stay of execution.

Proposals were put before Stoke-on-Trent City Council to close the market, currently based in Hinde Street, in a bid to save 40,000.

Council officers have been searching for a partner from the private sector to create a similar facility elsewhere in the city.

However, no businesses so far approached have expressed an interest in taking over the loss-making market.

Now a plan has been formed to save it, after council officers undertook a thorough review and managed to identify savings of 23,000-a-year.

That has allowed the market to remain open, at least for now. But future consideration could still be given to closing the facility.

And with the council needing to identify 35.6 million in cuts by April of this year alone, indoor markets could also come under threat.

A report to the city council compiled by officers says: "The operation of the market has been reviewed and changes made to security, waste management and staffing resulting in additional savings which may return the market to a break-even position if patronage remains constant or can be increased.

"It is suggested that given the savings achieved the review process continues, rather than closure at this time, to enable the potential for relocation to be further explored."

The city currently boasts 80,000 square feet of market space for 435 traders with latest figures showing income is around 1.8 million

?Our Jesus must rest?

“We are not trying to be disobedient to God, but when we look at Nelson Mandela, he’s our Jesus.”

|||

“Mandela must stay in Johannesburg”.

This was the sentiment from Qunu chieftainess Nokwanele Balizulu on Sunday, despite members of the village pining for and calling for former president Nelson Mandela to return to his ancestral home to recover among close family and friends.

Balizulu said that they had been told Mandela was going to come back two weeks ago - before they heard he was ill and that they had been preparing for his return.

She told The Mercury that she hoped Mandela would stay in Joburg so as to get the best treatment available.

“I’m just thinking of him because the hospitals around here are far and aren’t the best.

“People might want to see him despite his ill health and come with their problems to him. Mandela, being the man he is, will want to listen and see people, so he must just stay in Houghton. He’s really old, we just want him to rest.”

The chieftainess lives across the road from Mandela’s homestead in a pale-green house with a small tuckshop and a post office inside her yard.

She has been the chieftain of Qunu since 1996 after her husband, chief Sonwabo, died a few months after returning from Robben Island.

Balizulu spoke on behalf of the villagers and said: “We are not trying to be disobedient to God, but when we look at him, he’s our Jesus. By him saying something - it happens.”

A few media representatives were still staked outside the Mandela house on Sunday morning as rumours that the former ANC leader was going to arrive by helicopter did the rounds among journalists.

A police guard at the Mandela house, Sam Mbulali, who was stationed outside the tall walls that enclose Mandela’s residence, said they had no information of his arrival.

King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, leader of the AbaThembu nation, and Mandela’s nephew, condemned the presence of the media in Qunu.

People around the village said they had heard by word of mouth that Mandela had been released from hospital.

“You’d walk past a person and they’d say: ‘Hey, did you hear? uTata is alright,’ “ said one villager.

On Sunday churches around the village, and in Mthatha, conducted special services in honour of Madiba. - The Mercury

Ecowas: Gbagbo is not president

The regional bloc Ecowas says recognising Laurent Gbagbo as the president of Ivory Coast is out of the question for African leaders trying to resolve the country's post-election crisis.

|||

Addis Ababa - Recognising Ivory Coast's Laurent Gbagbo as president is out of the question for African leaders trying to resolve the country's post-election crisis, the West African regional bloc Ecowas said on Sunday.

Its statement was the strongest sign yet that Gbagbo had failed to convert African unease over possible military intervention into a reversal of UN-certified results showing rival Alassane Ouattara won a November 28 presidential poll.

“The decision that they took was to try once more a peaceful effort to remove Gbagbo, not to legitimise Gbagbo. That is out of the question,” James Victor Gbeho, president of the Ecowas Commission, told journalists.

He was speaking on the sidelines of an African Union (AU) summit in the Ethiopian capital.

On Friday, the AU's Peace and Security Council appointed five African leaders to end the crisis and gave them a one-month mandate. West African bloc Ecowas had previously threatened to use force to oust Gbagbo if other measures fail.

Ouattara has been recognised as president-elect by most world leaders but he is confined to a UN-protected hotel while Gbagbo retains control of the armed forces and most institutions despite mounting pressure and international sanctions.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon renewed a call on Gbagbo to leave power on Sunday, while his representative to Ivory Coast said peacekeepers there had superior firepower and “could always fire back” if Gbagbo's forces attacked.

“It is important for Gbagbo to fully respect the will of Ivorians. The longer it lasts the more serious will be the problems for the people,” Ban told a news conference in Addis Ababa on the sidelines of the AU summit.

The UN’s top representative to Ivory Coast, YJ Choi, also said the thousands of peacekeepers in the country were prepared to fight back if needed.

“Although our mission is to protect, we have superior equipment and we can always fire back,” he said.

“But what we are facing is a very peculiar situation. We can fire back but it's difficult when you have civilians lying on the ground. We are very careful not to be drawn into their game.”

In the run-up to the summit, divisions had emerged among African leaders over the stalemate, with Gbagbo hoping to secure support for a vote recount.

Some African leaders were opposed to a threat by Ecowas to remove Gbagbo by force if he refuses to hand over power. He was named winner by a legal body which cancelled hundreds of thousands of Ouattara votes, alleging fraud.

Gbeho said there were no differences between Ecowas and the AU's peace and security body and an attempt to authorise the AU to re-assess the results had been rejected.

A member of Gbagbo's government and head of the pro-Gbagbo Young Patriots youth movement, Charles Ble Goude, accused the United Nations of bias and of influencing the AU's decision to reject a recount.

“Ban Ki-Moon and his buddies have up until now have served the singular goal of placing their friend Alassance Ouattara at the head of Ivory Coast,” he said in a press release, adding it was now up to Ivorians to bring peace to the country.

Ble Goude previously had threatened to organise a march on the Golf Hotel, where Ouattara has set up his headquarters under the protection of UN peacekeepers.

So far more than 260 people have been killed since the crisis began and tens of thousands have fled to neighbouring Liberia. - Reuters

Where to now for Torres?

Ajax striker Luis Suarez is on his way to Liverpool - but seemingly as a replacement for Fernando Torres and not as a strike partner.

|||

Ajax striker Luis Suarez is on his way to Liverpool - but seemingly as a replacement for Fernando Torres and not as a strike partner.

Anfield fans’ joy at the club landing a big-name striker was short-lived after word filtered out that Torres’ advisors had asked Liverpool to “reconsider” the huge offer made by Chelsea for the player this week.

Torres is believed to have told the club that a departure from Merseyside is now the right move for his career.

The Anfield club have turned down Torres’ initial request and told the Spain striker they expect him to honour his long-term contract.

Chelsea, undeterred by their first bid of around £35m being unsuccessful, will come back before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline with an increased offer of £38m with striker Daniel Sturridge believed to be a potential £5 million makeweight.

Liverpool yesterday agreed to a £22.8m fee with Ajax Amsterdam for Uruguay international Suarez but just hours later Torres handed in his request.

“Fernando Torres submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool,” said a club statement.

“Fernando is under long-term contract and the club expect him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement.”

It had been hoped the capture of Uruguayan Suarez would provide the necessary evidence that American owners Fenway Sports Group were serious about investing in the squad and convince star names like Torres and goalkeeper Jose Reina that they could have a successful future at Anfield.

However, it appears the 26-year-old’s mind had already been made up to ask to leave in the wake of Chelsea’s bid even though he has a contract until the end of 2013.

The Stamford Bridge side have tried to sign Torres before and last summer it seemed they were preparing to make another offer when the player returned from South Africa as a World Cup winner.

But Torres - an Anfield idol - put an end to the speculation when he spoke publicly of his feelings for the club in August, saying: “My commitment and loyalty to the club and to the fans is the same as it was on my first day when I signed.”

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, an Anfield legend, is a man Torres has great respect and feeling for, so if anyone can talk the Spaniard round it is the legendary Scot. - Belfast Telegraph

Apprentice plumber scoops double award

FOR Ketan Chauhan, leaving his job as an office manager was one of the best things he has ever done.

He took up a role as an apprentice plumber with Nottingham City Homes (NCH), and has not looked back since.

He is now in the third year of a four-year course and on Thursday evening was named overall winner of Nottinghamshire Training Network's Work-Based Learning Awards.

"I was absolutely thrilled to win the award," said Ketan, 33, of Carlton. "I thought I may have a chance of winning in my category, but I didn't imagine I'd come out on top overall."

Ketan was the winner of the Personal Achiever of the Year accolade, one of nine categories in the awards on Thursday.

He then beat the other category winners to become overall champion.

Ketan said although he had a promising career lined up in office management, he jumped at the chance to take on a plumbing role after seeing an ad in the Nottingham Post.

The course is supported by Stephenson College in Lenton, where Ketan spends one day a week.

"I wanted to do something which would make me healthier, especially after my cousin had died," he said.

"I contacted them and I began working on the apprenticeship. It has gone really well."

During his apprenticeship, Ketan has worked for the repairs team at NCH but is now involved in renovating homes ready for new tenants.

"I often go around with another member of staff, though sometimes I am on my own," he said.

Ketan is urging others looking for a new career to consider doing an apprenticeship, and is backing the Post's 100 in 100 campaign.

With the Notts and Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce and the National Apprentice Service, we are looking to identify 100 apprentice places in 100 days.

"It is a great way into a new job as you can get trained up fully while you are actually doing the work," he said. "I'd encourage anyone to have a go."

Learning development officer Ian Richardson said: "Ketan is a real credit to himself and NCH. We are delighted with his success, and it really goes to show that apprenticeships are worthwhile."

Stephenson College principal Nigel Leigh said: "The professional approach he adopts to his apprenticeship is an example to all of our students."

THE MAN WHO DARED TO DREAM AND TO ACTUALISE ? Being the citation on the 2010 African of The Year, Danny Jordan

The 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa, was a moment of immense pride for the entire African continent. Between June 11 and July 11, 2010, football brought the whole world to share the dreams and aspirations of the South African people and those of the entire African continent. As part of the preparation for the tournament, South Africa constructed and refurbished stadia; modernized and constructed airports, railways and bus systems and generally renewed the urban landscape in many parts of the country. But above all else, an outstanding team of Africans went to work, to prove a point about the capacity of Africans to successfully host an international event of the magnitude of the World Cup.

Mubarak fires his cabinet

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has refused to bow to demands that he resign.

|||

Cairo - Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak refused on Saturday to bow to demands that he resign after ordering troops and tanks into cities in an attempt to quell an explosion of street protests against his 30-year rule.

Demonstrators were still out in the streets in the early hours of Saturday morning, as were looters. Parts of Cairo looked like a war zone, filled with smoke, rubble and the choking smell of tear gas.

Mubarak dismissed his government and called for national dialogue to avert chaos after a day of battles between police and protesters angry over poverty and autocratic rule. Medical sources said at least 24 people had been killed and over a thousand injured in clashes in Cairo, Suez and Alexandria.

“It is not by setting fire and by attacking private and public property that we achieve the aspirations of Egypt and its sons, but they will be achieved through dialogue, awareness and effort,” he said in a televised address, his first public appearance since the protests began four days ago.

The unprecedented unrest has sent shock waves through the Middle East, where other autocratic rulers may face challenges, and unsettled global financial markets on Friday. United States President Barack Obama said he had spoken with Mubarak and urged “concrete steps that advance the rights of the Egyptian people”.

The army, deployed for the first time in the crisis, cleared Cairo's Tahrir square towards midnight. Shortly after Mubarak's speech, protesters returned in their hundreds, defying a curfew. They said sacking the cabinet was far from enough.

“It was never about the government, by God. It is you (Mubarak) who has to go! What you have done to the people is enough!” said one protester.

Shots were heard in the evening near parliament and the headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Party was in flames, the blaze lighting up the night sky. Cars were set alight and police posts torched.

A Reuters team saw a gang of looters storm into a bank and carry out the safe.

More than half of the dead in Friday's clashes were reported in Suez, the eastern city which has been ground zero for the most violent protests over the past four days.

Mubarak, 82, has been a close ally of Washington and beneficiary of US aid for decades, justifying his autocratic rule in part by citing a danger of Islamist militancy. The Muslim Brotherhood opposition, however, appears to have played little role in the unrest.

The protests were triggered by the overthrow two weeks ago of Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Al Ben Ali. Street protests in Tunis focused on similar issues of poverty and political repression. Demonstrations have also flared in Yemen, Algeria, Sudan and Jordan in recent weeks.

“There will be new steps towards democracy and freedoms and new steps to face unemployment and increase the standard of living and services, and there will be new steps to help the poor and those with limited income,” Mubarak said.

“There is a fine line between freedom and chaos and I lean towards freedom for the people in expressing their opinions as much as I hold on to the need to maintain Egypt's safety and stability,” he added.

Obama also called on the Egyptian government to halt interference in access to the Internet, mobile phone service and Internet social networks that have been used by protesters.

“I want to be very clear in calling upon the Egyptian authorities to refrain from any violence against peaceful protesters,” he said.

Anthony Skinner, Associate Director of political risk consultancy Maplecroft, said Mubarak's conduct was reminiscent of that of Ben Ali in his final days in power.

“Mubarak is showing he is still there for now and he is trying to deflect some of the force of the process away from himself by sacking the Cabinet.

“We will have to see how people react but I don't think it will be enough at all. I wouldn't want to put a number on his chances of survival - we really are in uncharted territory.”

Markets were hit by the uncertainty. US stocks suffered their biggest one-day loss in nearly six months, crude oil prices surged and the dollar and US Treasury debt gained as investors looked to safe havens.

“I think the next two to three weeks, the crisis in Egypt and potentially across the Middle East, might be an excuse for a big selloff of 5 to 10 percent,” said Keith Wirtz, president and chief investment officer at Fifth Third Asset Management in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Many protesters are young men and women. Two thirds of Egypt's 80 million people are below 30 and many have no jobs. About 40 percent of Egyptians live on less than $2 a day.

Elections were due to be held in September and until now few had doubted that Mubarak would remain in control or bring in a successor in the shape of his 47-year-old son Gamal.

Father and son deny that Gamal is being groomed for the job. - Reuters

Kenya?s justice system causes rift

A rift developed in Kenya's coalition government as Prime Minister Raila Odinga declared “null and void” key judiciary appointments made by the president.

|||

Nairobi - A rift developed in Kenya's coalition government on Saturday as Prime Minister Raila Odinga declared “null and void” key judiciary appointments made by the president.

President Mwai Kibaki on Friday announced a new chief justice, attorney general and director of public prosecutions in a move aimed at revamping Kenya's weak judiciary and adding credibility to attempts to have high-profile Kenyans facing International Criminal Court prosecutions tried locally.

Odinga, who came to power in 2008 in a power-sharing deal that ended months of bloody post-election violence, was in Ethiopia for an African Union meeting on Ivory Coast at the time. He rejected the appointments, saying he had not been consulted contrary to a statement issued by the president's office.

“Without a doubt this decision has thrown the country into a major Constitutional Crisis and may be the beginning of the end in respect of the implementation of the reform agenda if not corrected and reversed,” Odinga said in a statement.

Kenya is reforming its justice system as it aims to head off a repeat of violence that claimed over 1,300 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands in the wake of December 2007's disputed presidential elections.

Kibaki appointed lawyers Alnashir Visram as chief justice, Githu Muigai as attorney general and Kioko Kilukumi as director of public prosecutions.

The premier said he believed the appointments would do nothing to end decades of impunity that have seen successive governments steeped in graft escape punishment.

“The appointments have been made to serve the interests of a few people, including elements within upper echelons of government who have serious credibility and integrity issues and constitute the networks of impunity,” he said.

The two men and their backers have been at loggerheads on more than one occasion since the coalition government was formed, most recently when Odinga opposed moves to scupper the ICC probe.

The ICC chief prosecutor in December named six people as being those considered most responsible for the post-elections violence.

Uhuru Kenyatta, finance minister and son of the nation's first president, and former Odinga ally William Ruto, currently suspended from his ministerial position to face corruption charges, are the most high-profile suspects.

Kenya is expected to secure the backing of the African Union at this weekend's summit in Ethiopia for its attempt to have the United Nations Security Council defer the ICC investigations for one year.

ICC judges are expected in March to rule on whether the six suspects should face trial. - Sapa-dpa

Chelsea draw, Crawley through

Chelsea needed a late equaliser to draw 1-1 at Everton, while Crwaley reached the last 16 of the FA Cup.

|||

London – Holders Chelsea needed a late equaliser by Salomon Kalou to snatch a 1-1 draw that kept them in the FA Cup after a Louis Saha header had put Everton on course for a fourth-round upset at Goodison Park on Saturday.

At the other end of the soccer spectrum minor league Crawley Town advanced to the last 16 for the first time after they beat League Two (fourth division) Torquay 1-0 away despite having two penalties saved.

Matthew Tubbs got the only goal late in the first half for Crawley, who knocked out league clubs Swindon Town and Derby County in the last two rounds, though Tubbs was one of the players to have a penalty saved by Scott Bevan in a match where both sides had a man sent off. Leyton Orient, struggling at the wrong end of League One (third division), pulled off a second successive upset win when, having knocked out Norwich City away from home in the last round, they won 2-1 at Championship (second division) promotion-chasers Swansea.

In two more of the weekend's five all-Premier League ties, Aston Villa beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 while Bolton Wanderers drew 0-0 at home with Wigan Athletic.

Birmingham City, who reached the League Cup final in midweek, came from 2-0 down to beat Championship side Coventry City 3-2.

Eleven-times winners Manchester United visit League One Southampton later on Saturday in a repeat of the 1976 final when then-second division Southampton claimed a shock 1-0 win.

Chelsea, bidding to be the first team to win the FA Cup in three successive seasons since Blackburn Rovers managed it in 1884-86, looked flat all day at Goodison and only good goalkeeping by Petr Cech kept them in the game.

Everton, beaten by the Londoners in the 2009 final, took control in the second half and led after 62 minutes when Saha powerfully headed in a corner.

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti reacted by sending on Kalou in the 70th minute and five minutes later the Ivorian had equalised when he finished off a swift counter-attack in virtually Chelsea's only chance of the half.

“The result was good, we were 1-0 down and it wasn't easy to come back into the game,” Ancelotti told the club's website (www.chelseafc.com).

“Everton put strong pressure all the time on the pitch, used a lot of long balls, they were very dangerous on set-pieces and scored on one. It was a difficult game but we showed good spirit.”

When asked about his club's bid for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres the Italian said: “I don't know, we will have to wait.” – Reuters

Dull draw for AmaZulu, Celtic

Amazulu and Bloemfontein Celtic had to be content with a point apiece when they played to a draw at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

|||

Amazulu and Bloemfontein Celtic had to be content with a point apiece when they played to a 1-1 draw at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Ntokozo Sikhakhane's first half strike was cancelled out be a thumping second half effort from Nathan Paulse.

There was not much for the nearly 3 000 spectators to enjoy in the first half as both teams lacked the necessary cutting edge to find routes to goal.

The only bright moment in the first half was when Amazulu's Lehlohonolo Majoro zipped down the right flank and played a cross into the Celtic penalty area.

A mistimed clearance by a Celtic defender sat up nicely for Sikhakhane to have a crack at goal. The midfielder netted with a swerving left-footed shot.

The visitor's first real effort at goal came just after the interval when Moses Spandeel got a header to a Prince Hlela set-piece but it flew just past the Amazulu upright.

The 56th minute could have been the turning point in the match had the referee and his assistant been alert to the fact that Amazulu's striker Ayanda Dlamini did in fact get the ball to cross the Celtic goal line with a close range strike and that goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb only intercepted the effort after it crossed the line, but it was not to be.

Celtic secured their point in the 72nd minute and, in the process, stretched their unbeaten streak to seven games when Paulse sunk a strike from more than 25 metres away, leaving goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela a well beaten man. – Sapa

Liverpool move up after scrappy win

Liverpool have clinched a gritty victory over Fulham to hand Kenny Dalglish his first home win since returning to Anfield.

|||

London - Liverpool clinched a gritty 1-0 victory over Fulham on Wednesday to hand Kenny Dalglish his first home win since returning to Anfield for his second spell as manager.

It took a scrappy 52nd minute own goal from John Pantsil, who sliced the ball into his own net after Fernando Torres shot deflected off the post, to secure the three points and Liverpool's second consecutive Premier League win after the weekend victory over lowly Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The win lifted Liverpool to seventh in the standings with 32 points.

“We will take anything as any club will do,” manager Dalglish told Sky Sports. “At times we played good football and deserved the bounce of the ball.

“I have seen three games and that is one of the few games we have had a little bit of good fortune.”

Liverpool could have taken an early lead when a rejuvenated Torres latched onto a pass from Raul Meireles and poked it into the net only to be pulled back by the linesman's flag.

While Fulham keeper David Stockdale made fine saves to deny Meireles from eight metres and a long-range effort from Glen Johnson in a first half largely dominated by the Reds.

But after taking the lead, Dalglish's side failed to press home their advantage and allowed the visitors to maintain a foothold in the game.

Fulham pressed hard in the closing minutes and should have levelled when Moussa Dembele saw a shot from eight yards scrambled away by Reds keeper Pepe Reina.

“I think Fulham might feel a bit of injustice and feel they should have got something from the game,” Dalglish added.

“I think in the first half we had six good chances and one chalked off that was really onside.

“But the lads put in a great effort and threw their bodies on the line because they didn't want to lose a goal and they have worked hard all season.” - Reuters

The storm is over - Modise

Talented Teko Modise, the man touted to don Jomo Sono’s famous Bucs No10 jersey, has quit for Downs.

|||

‘The Storm is over …!” Teko Modise tweeted on Wednesday and by Thursday it was clear that the direction in which he had blown was Mamelodi Sundowns.

Modise met with Brazilians management in the afternoon to iron out his personal terms and he will be unveiled at a press conference this morning at Chloorkop.

Earlier on Thursday, meanwhile, Modise sat in a natty red bow-tie, while Buccaneers chairman Irvin Khoza announced his imminent departure.

A hastily arranged press conference was expected to merely give the results of an investigation into Modise’s actions, with the midfielder suspended this month by Pirates, after absconding from camp ahead of an Absa Premiership game with Santos.

Modise claimed he had answered an urgent call from his wife, after their house had been broken into.

Pirates, it seemed, wanted proof.

Khoza, however, dropped a bombshell in declaring that Pirates had decided to leave the disciplinary charges alone, because Modise was on his way out of the club. “We are gathered here because of a notice sent out to the media indicating that the club have finished the Teko Modise investigation,” said Khoza, brandishing a file with Modise’s name on it.

“We had concerns in terms of what happened at the training camp (Modise left without permission), and subsequently what happened at gym the day after the game. Everyone was supposed to attend, and Teko did not … We had to investigate the reasons for him to abscond.

“(Today) we took Teko inside to indicate to him how we intended to proceed with this matter. We had to discuss a call with Teko and his manager (Jazzman Mahlakgane) – that call was an offer to secure the services of Teko. We asked Mr Mahlakgane and Teko, as to whether we should proceed with the DC, or if they wanted to accept the proposed offer. We wanted to keep the player.

“The player decided to settle for the offer proposed … Orlando Pirates have acceded to the request from the player and accepted the offer from Sundowns. Teko has now left for Sundowns, any disciplinary action would have no purpose.”

Khoza admitted that Orlando Pirates had tried to do a swap deal with Sundowns involving Mozambican winger Elias Pelembe. The Brazilians, however, were unwilling to give Pelembe to Pirates, so the Buccaneers accepted a cash offer.

Modise’s departure comes after a frustrating season at Pirates, where he has barely played – clearly not a favourite of Pirates coach Ruud Krol.

The Bucs midfielder had been unafraid to vent his anger on twitter, but he cut a more modest figure in Houghton yesterday.

“First and foremost I want to thank the chairman for the opportunity he gave me,” said Modise.

“He told me my life would not be the same again when I signed. At the time I didn’t understand, but after playing a couple of games I realised the impact of the statement he had made.

“I tried my best within the team, I got so many opportunities, I played over 50 times for South Africa, I captained South Africa, I captained Pirates as well. I thought I had done everything I could in four years with the team. There are so many young players coming through, like Mark Mayambela, like Daine Klate, I think they should get the opportunity to shine.

“I want to thank the chairman for the opportunity to further my game and I wish them the best of luck as they are doing well in the league.”

Khoza added that in the absence of Modise, Pirates’ No10 jersey was again to be retired.

“When Teko came to the club we made a promise, we identified him as a player to wear the No10 jersey. We were hoping one day that somebody would better the performance of Jomo Sono,” said Khoza.

“Now that Teko is leaving it will depend on who comes through at Pirates to force us to recall the No10 jersey.

“For now it remains retired in honour of the outstanding performance from Jomo Sono during his career at Pirates,” said the Pirates chairman. - The Star

County council's grant cuts for voluntary groups to be delayed

CUTS to grants given to voluntary organisations next year by Notts County Council look set to delayed.

The council planned to cut the 3.3 million fund to 1.65 million next year.

But voluntary groups spoke out against the changes and half of the people who responded to a council survey on the move opposed it.

The council now plans to cut the 3.3 million fund to 2.1 million.

However, the extra funding for next year is a temporary measure to allow organisations time to adjust to funding drops – with the overall savings made over the following three years.

The council will also appoint three specialist advisors at its contact centre to give advice on benefits after 43 per cent of respondents said they opposed scrapping the Welfare Rights service.

The proposed 200-a-week increase in charges for residents of council-run residential homes who pay the full charge has also been staggered.

It will now rise by 100 from April, and by a further 100 from April 2012.

Councillor Kay Cutts, leader of Notts County Council, said: "We have listened to significant concerns by making a number of changes to our original proposals."

JSE drops on global sentiment

The JSE leaked 160 points at its opening on Friday, tracking negative sentiment from both Asia and Europe.

|||

The JSE leaked 160 points at its opening on Friday, tracking negative sentiment from both Asia and Europe.

The local bourse will eye US GDP and confidence data out later, in conjunction with earnings results from Ford and Honeywell.

By 09:19 local time, the JSE all share index lost 0.50%, with resources down 0.98% and platinum miners 0.18% lower. Gold miners were 1.45% down.

Financials dipped 0.21%, banks were 0.58% lower and industrials lost 0.22%.

The rand was trading at 7.05 to the dollar, from 7.02 at the JSE's close on Thursday. Gold was quoted at US$1,313.50 a troy ounce from US$1,334.48/oz at the JSE's previous close, while platinum was at $1,772/oz from $1,810.50/oz before.

“Asia is softer after S&P cut Japans' ratings, while Europe is expected to follow suit. As has been the case during the week, the market will continue to track sentiment from abroad,” a local trader said.

“In the US, confidence data from University of Michigan along with GDP data is expected to drive sentiment,” she said.

Dow Jones Newswires reports that most Asian stock markets were lower on Friday, with shares in Japan hit by Standard & Poor's downgrade of the country's sovereign debt rating, while Samsung Electronics rose in Seoul after its earnings topped expectations.

Japan's Nikkei Stock Average was off 1.2%, South Korea's Kospi Composite was off 0.3%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index slipped 0.4% and China's Shanghai Composite fell 0.1%.

The Tokyo market was pressured lower by the downgrade news, with financials bearing the brunt of the selloff, while investors were also discouraged by a few downbeat earnings results.

Citing concerns over high debt levels in Japan, ratings provider S&P cut Japan's long-term credit rating to AA- from AA.

European stocks are set to open mostly lower Friday, following a lacklustre session in the US and weak Asian shares, says Chris Weston at IG Markets. He calls the FTSE 100 down 12 points at 5,953.

The continued decline in gold prices, however, which are approaching four-month lows, suggests that risk appetite is building, says Weston. On the economic calendar, euro-zone M3 is due out at 09:00 GMT, while in the US, the first release of fourth-quarter GDP is due at 13:30 GMT and University of Michigan confidence is at 14:55 GMT. On the US earnings front, Ford, Chevron and Honeywell are slated to report.

On the JSE, Anglo American (AGL) dropped 3.51 rand to 353 rand and BHP Billiton (BIL) lost 3.43 rand to 273.85 rand. Sasol (SOL) declined 2.38 rand to 350.60 rand.

Among gold miners, AngloGold Ashanti (ANG) shipped 4.41 rand or 1.41% to 307.54 rand, Gold Fields (GFI) slipped 1.65 rand or 1.45% lower to 112 rand and Harmony (HAR) wavered 1.24 rand or 1.63% to 74.91 rand.

Anglo Platinum (AMS) gave up 6.46 rand to 718.05 rand.

Kumba Iron Ore (KIO) lost 5.92 rand or 1.27% to 461.58 rand.

Diversified miner Exxaro (EXX) was 1.01 rand weaker to 147.99 rand, and African Rainbow (ARI) slipped 1.25 rand lower to 208.45 rand.

Among industrials, British American Tobacco (BTI) dropped 2.50 rand to 264 rand, and SABMiller (SAB) shed 1.95 rand to 234 rand.

Banking group Standard Bank (SBK) handed over 1.19 ran or 1.1% to 106.66 rand.

Retailer Foschini (FOS) added 1.08 rand or 1.3% to 84.21 rand. - I-Net Bridge

Craziness as Bucs go top

Jonty Mark watched Orlando Pirates’ stunning comeback against Wits and wonders if they have enough to propel them to the title.

|||

Madness, insanity, mayhem.

That’s really the only way to describe the way in which Orlando Pirates climbed to the top of the Absa Premiership on Saturday night.

Two-nil down to Wits, then 3-2 up, with a stoppage time winner from the oft-forgotten Katlego Mashego. It was heart-stopping stuff.

All of a sudden, Ruud Krol’s Buccaneers are in a winning position. And all of that after a first half at Orlando Stadium where Krol looked a couple of crayons short of a full set. His decision to pick Senzo Meyiwa ahead of Moeneeb Josephs backfired horribly, as the Pirates ‘keeper practically gifted Wits a two-goal lead.

Patrick Malokase was another bizarre selection, particularly ahead of Mark Mayambela. Krol had done a similar trick a week earlier, selecting Phenyo Mongala in the murderously dull 0-0 draw with Santos.

One wondered again this weekend if Mayambela had done something to upset his coach. But as Krol messed up his first half tactics, so he redeemed himself after the break. Mayambela duly arrived, and tore into Wits’ fragile self-confidence. Isaac Chansa rediscovered that tasty habit of ghosting into the box at the right moment to supply a finishing touch.

And then Mashego, who hadn’t scored a decent goal all season, sumptuously smashed home the coup de grace. Which just had to leave one wondering – could this actually be Pirates’ year to bring home the title?

Frankly, this title race is as confusing as a David Lynch movie, and to predict a winner, you may as well throw about five or six names in a hat and take a lucky dip.

But, in all the chaos, Krol’s men have as good a chance as anyone. Squad depth is much waffled about in these circles, but there’s no doubting that Krol is one of the only coaches in South Africa with the capacity to haul off a player like Daine Klate at half-time, and know he has capable attacking wide men on the bench like Mayambela and Tlou Segolela. Right now, Pirates can even afford to let Teko Modise sulk in his bedroom.

It is true that Pirates lead the table as we speak only because Sundowns have severely lost their way in the past month or so. And that Kaizer Chiefs will actually replace them at the top with victory over Bloemfontein Celtic tonight.

But the Buccaneers are also the league’s in-form team, winning six and drawing two of their last eight matches. Perhaps it’s that winning habit that gave them the confidence to bounce back against Wits, and who knows, that could propel them all the way to title glory.

Errant ministers named after ?mistake?

The names of the 24 Cabinet members who failed to disclose their financial interests in time are now public.

|||

Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma's failure to name 24 Cabinet members who failed to disclose their financial interests in time was a “bona fide mistake”, a government spokesperson said on Thursday.

“As said in President Jacob Zuma's reply to Parliament, this failure was a bona fide mistake as the members had disclosed their assets and interests to Parliament at the same time in terms of the Parliamentary Ethics Code,” a statement from government spokesperson Themba Maseko said.

“When the mistake was realised, all members of the executive corrected their mistake and made the correct disclosures.”

Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Athol Trollip said on Wednesday that Zuma's response “is indicative of the administration's growing disrespect for accountability and transparency”.

Maseko said Zuma did not feel that “any useful purpose” would be served in releasing the names as members had already complied.

He said however, that the national executive has “nothing to hide” on the matter and listed the names, who include:

- President Jacob Zuma.

- Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

- Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies.

Car parking charges are overhauled in Hanley

PARKING charges will undergo a radical overhaul to encourage longer shopping trips and make it fairer for those leaving their cars outside key areas.

The review will mean drivers parking on 'premium' car parks in Hanley will pay less for longer stays, with a four-hour ticket costing 4 instead of 5.20.

But those using the popular car parks at Lower Huntbach Street and Meigh Street in the city centre for just one hour will see the price rise from 1 and 1.30 respectively to 1.50.

Under-used car parks in Castle Street, Warner Street and Upper Huntbach Street could close under the review, while the car park in John Street is earmarked to shut in March to make way for the new Hanley bus station.

To encourage drivers to use the nearby John Street multi-storey instead, 1.5 million will be invested in refurbishing the facility, including a new entrance.

The new fees will also include a 1.50 all-day Sunday charge on the car parks closest to the shops.

Off-street parking outside the main city centre will see a fall in pay-and-display costs, with a one-hour ticket at John Street and Meigh Street multi-storeys costing 1 instead of 1.20 and 1.30 respectively, while a four-hour stay will cost 3. Sunday parking will be 1.

The cost of on-street parking will rise but motorists will be able to leave their cars there for longer periods of time.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council ordered a working group to be set up to devise a charging strategy last February.

It says the tariffs aim to encourage shoppers to park in the city centre.

City Independent councillor Brian Ward, cabinet member for housing, planning and transportation, said: "We hope it will improve things.

"We need to look at all the car parks in the city centre. Some have a higher value than others because they are closer to the shops.

"Members of the public saw it as unfair to be charged the same to park in the city centre as at the back of the shops at Normacot."

If the council's cabinet approves the policy on February 3, it would come into force from April.

City Centre Partnership spokesman Richard Day, pictured below left, said: "This strategy seems a very mixed bag. Parking prices are up and down and individual car parks have been targeted, which can be confusing for people."

Administration assistant Paula Cope, aged 43, regularly drives to shop in the city centre from Birches Head.

She said: "Parking is expensive in the city centre and it does need looking at.

"I suppose it is fairer to pay more to park closer to the shops, but if it gets much more expensive, people will stop paying to come to the city centre."

Meanwhile, Stoke-on-Trent City Council is to broadcast its first meeting live over the internet.

The authority's full council will begin at 2.30pm and will include reports on its various committees.
