New plans for leisure centres parking charge

REVISED plans to charge motorists for parking at two leisure centre car parks are being drawn up.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council had planned to introduce pay-and-display parking at Dimensions Leisure Centre, in Burslem, and at Fenton Manor Sports Centre from January 1.

It predicted charges of 1 for up to three hours and 4 for all-day parking would net 282,691-a-year for the cash-strapped authority.

But the charges have still not been introduced after complaints from college students who park at Fenton Manor to go to lectures because there is no parking provision at their new campus.

Now senior councillors are working on a revised scheme.

A report to city councillors states: "There has been extensive consultation with partners, including the council's parking services team and Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College.

"A revised proposal has been developed incorporating a permit scheme."

Details of the scheme are expected to be revealed at a cabinet meeting on March 31.

The council has to save, or generate in income, 35.6 million by the end of March next year.
