Pervert hid drugs after criminals said they would lie

SEX offender Mohammed Ramzan has been jailed after he was coerced by criminals to keep drugs at his home.

The 35-year-old, who was handed a three-year community rehabilitation order at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in 2007 after admitting indecent assault on a girl aged under 16, was told to store the drugs at his house or the man, who he would not name, would arrange for young girls to make false allegations against him.

Prosecutor Neil Ahuja yesterday told the same court police executed a search warrant at Ramzan's house in Addison Street, Birches Head, at 9.45pm on May 16 last year.

They found a quantity of cocaine and powder containing the class A drug in the cooker as well as a set of digital scales.

Three more sets of electronic scales and a roll of plastic bags were found in the house.

Ramzan pleaded guilty to possession of class A drugs with intent to supply on the basis he was asked to keep the drugs at his house by a violent man he was scared of and he intended to return the drugs to the man.

Nicholas Walker, mitigating, said Ramzan's home was used as a "safe house" where the cocaine was diluted.

He said Ramzan was timid, shy and vulnerable and he was preyed upon by others.

"They went to considerable efforts about how they would bring young girls to the premises and how they would make complaints," said Mr Walker.

"It is not surprising he acted as he did. He knows he had the option to tell the police but because of his history with the police he felt less able than others might do to contact the police.

"He was between a rock and a hard place.

"He knows what the right thing to do was and knows he is going to pay for not doing the right and proper thing."

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones jailed Ramzan for 12 months.

He told the defendant: "The courts view seriously those who involve themselves in the supply of controlled drugs.

"You were placed under considerable coercion by others more sophisticated involved in drugs supply.

"One call to the police at the right time would have extracted you from all those threats. You did not take that course.

"There has to be an immediate custodial sentence for your role."

Ramzan will serve up to half the sentence with the rest on licence.
