Cape Town is the backdrop of a new, glamorous reality TV show similar to Laguna Beach, The Hills and Jersey Shore.

The show, Clifton Shores, is expected to air in the US in a matter of months.

It features four young American beauties who jostle for attention as they start their new lives in Cape Town.

They set up home in a seaside mansion in Clifton, mingle with the city’s elite, and live it up at the swankiest nightclubs and parties.

Quinton van der Burgh, who came up with the concept, said it was packed with “drama, drama, drama”.

“When people look at the drama reality shows, they think: ‘There’s no way that’s unscripted.’

“But, put four very different, beautiful, dynamic girls under one roof and it’s bound to happen.”

The American women – Katy Johnson, Destiny Moniz, Jamillette Gaxiola and Kathy David – are from Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

When they aren’t living it up in Clifton, they’re working for Van der Burgh’s marketing company, Quintessential, with three South African women, Claire Dante, Rikki Brest and Raquel O’Donoghue.

The production team started filming in late January and is expected to wrap up next month.

Some local internet users have compared the show to the US series Jersey Shore.

However, American director and film-maker Christopher Roland – who has lived in South Africa for 15 years, previously worked on the hit movie Stander and directs most of the Clifton Shores episodes – said the shows couldn’t be more different.

“This is soft, unscripted drama,” he said.

“We push the storylines at times, but the content is inspired by the real lives of these women, who we hope can be role models to other young women.”

Still, there wouldn’t a lack of intrigue.

“Yes, we see people end up cheating on each other, but we also see that countered with examples of healthy relationships. Some characters are likeable, others are the kind you like to hate.”

Although the producers are keeping details of the episodes’ content secret, Van der Burgh said Cape Town’s landmarks would feature prominently.

Already a few US networks were interested in the show, he said.

It could air there in a few months’ time, and in South Africa by the end of the year or early next year.

One of the producers, David Kolko, who has previously worked with MTV, said the show shouldn’t fail to appeal to an American audience because it featured American cast members.

“A US audience will be able to relate to them,” said Kolko. “They’re four beautiful girls with strong personalities who are experiencing Cape Town for the first time.”

Van der Burgh has also brought top American directors and producers on board, including Hisham Abed, who has worked on MTV hits Laguna Beach and The Hills.

“We’re trying to showcase South Africa in its best light; we didn’t want a cheap production.”
