Sight of scrap cars will hit future of area

A PLANNING application has been lodged for a controversial car breakers' yard.

Planning enforcement officers have been investigating the business in Newport Lane, Middleport.

It followed complaints from residents about a growing amount of scrap metal at the site which is next to the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Now registered owner Festival Waters has applied for retrospective permission to use the land to break up and store cars.

But the application has sparked fears it will hit Middleport's regeneration.

Middleport, Longport and Dalehall Community Association secretary Rosemary Wright, of Elers Grove, said: "The application does not take into account the major plans for the area.

"It will increase traffic on an already over-used road and could add to dangers for pedestrians."

Objections have also been lodged by the owners of the former Co-op Bakery site which is set to be turned into housing.

Rob Snowling, of Norfolk-based Morton Assets, said: "The use of the site for breaking and storing cars is inappropriate. It will neither preserve or enhance the character of the area."
