As what has been a wretched season for Matsatsantsa a Pitori draws to a close, one cannot help but foresee Gavin Hunt and his team suffering the ignominy of becoming the worst-performing defending champions since the launch of the Premiership in 1996.
Traditionally, league champions perform well. Three have defended their titles – two on more than one occasion. The rest of the times, save for one, the holders have finished in the top five.
The odd occasion was in the 2002/03 season, when holders Santos finished ninth. The People’s Team had won the league under Gordon Igesund and came a cropper the following season under the joint leadership of Boebie Solomons and Farouk Khan.
It looks like Santos will now finally be rid off their “worst holders’ record” this season.
Positioned among the relegation-threatened teams prior to Wednesday night’s clash with Moroka Swallows, SuperSport do not look anything like the team that dominated the local league the past three seasons.
And there has been nothing in their play to suggest they will do anything special in the remaining matches to redeem themselves – although stranger things have happened.
With a defence as leaky as a sieve and a strike force as blunt as a butter knife, it is more likely that SuperSport will suffer more humiliation – as they did at Seisa Ramabodu on Sunday – rather than thrash opposition the way they did in the previous three seasons.
Hunt described the 5-0 defeat by Bloemfontein Celtic as the worst of his career.
He would do well to brace himself for further embarrassment as he looks likely to lead SuperSport to the worst-yet Premiership finish by a champion side.
