Johannesburg - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will not be discussing the leadership of the African National Congress at its 5th Central Executive Committee, secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi said on Sunday.

“Cosatu has not discussed any succession or who we are going to support,” he said at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

“It’s cagey to open discussions on leadership too early.”

There was still 18 months until the ANC's elective conference in 2012.

Vavi said the right time to start talking about the nominations for the leadership would be four months before the conference.

However, the central committee would be assessing the leadership.

At the last central committee meeting in 2007 Cosatu had taken a resolution to form an alliance pact.

Vavi said those alliance relations were going to be discussed during the four-day central committee meeting.

The alliance was in a “better place”, he said.

“We are coming out of a local government election where we showed unity.

“We fared well (in the election) because of it.”

He said the committee meeting would be discussing a number of policies and work-related issues. One of the points of the discussion was going to be Walmart.

On Sunday, six days after Walmart completed its acquisition of a controlling stake in Massmart, it started advertising price cuts and new business opportunities for South Africa with an eight-page colour advertisement in the Sunday Times newspaper.

In the advert, Walmart said it intended creating 15 000 jobs in the next five years.

Vavi said it was premature for Walmart advertisement was premature.

“They are pulling the wool over our eyes... The cost to the economy is going to be massive,” he said.

Vavi was at Gallagher Estate on Sunday to check that everything was ready for the four-day central committee meeting.

“We are ready. It's all systems go,” he said. - Sapa
