Orlando Pirates have announced on their website that Brazilian Julio Leal is their new head coach, replacing Ruud Krol.

According to the website, the well travelled Brazilian has signed a three-year deal with the Bucaneers.

The Brazilian is no stranger to these shores having coached Amazulu in 2007 and also Moroka Swallows, where he led the Dube Birds to Nedbank Cup glory in 2009.

“I am honoured to join Orlando Pirates Football Club,” said Leal.”This is a club with great history and tradition – not forgetting great fans.

"I am looking forward to being part of the Orlando Pirates family and thank the Chairman for the trust he’s shown in me.”

He added: “This is a club with a solid foundation, which I aim to build upon during my tenure.”

Leal cut his teeth in 1974 as youth team coach of Flamengo. A few years later he crossed the floor to arch rivals Vasco Da Gama; but he got his big break in 1991 when he was appointed coach of the Brazil national team U-20.

Leal has also had stints in the UAE, Japan, Kuwait as well as Trinidad and Tobago.

Leal will meet his new players and support staff when they report for pre season on Sunday, 3 July 2011.

Orlando Pirates have a gruelling pre season programme next month namely the Vodacom Challenge where they will face perennial rivals Kaizer Chiefs as well as English giants Tottenham Hotspur.

The Premier Soccer League officially kicks off in August in the form of the MTN 8 Cup competition where Pirates will seek to successfully defend their title.
