Two goals in the last eight minutes of play allowed Maritzburg United to salvage a point from their 2-2 draw with Vasco Da Gama at the Harry Gwala stadium last night.

Musa Nyatama who came on as a 70th minute substitute seemed to have jolted the Team of Choice into life by helping to set-up their first goal and then he netted the equaliser in stoppage time.

If United's management and supporters were no sure why the Team of Choice find themselves entrenched in a battle for survival, then they need to look no further than their team's first half performance.

Vasco who are usually poor travellers, having collected one win from all their travel thus far in the season, bossed possession and through their enterprising play, were able to fashion more strikes on goal in the first half, whereas United had to wait until the 45th minute to get a strike on target. Kurt Lentjies hit a stinging drive from distance which goalkeeper Jason Barnard was able to parry to safety.

However, it was the experienced Zuma who was the brightest player of the first half, not because he sported his trademark blonde hairdo, but for the manner in which he waltzed past markers in the first half.

The Cape Town side hit the front as early as the sixth minute when their auxiliary striker, Keenan Lesch, made good contact with a shot from the edge of United's penalty area which keeper Shu-Aib Walters parried into the path of Jonathan Amorgam. The wide midfielder applied a composed finish with his right foot, from close range.

For all his endeavours, Zuma was able to get his name on the score sheet by getting onto the end of a Josephy Kamwendo cross.

But United changed gears in the second half and kept Vasco pinned in their own territory for much of this stanza. Just when it seemed as if the home side would finish empty handed, Gert Schalkwyk drilled a low shot home in the 83rd minute after being set up through the individual brilliance of Nyatama.

The lanky Nyatama became the darling of Maritzburg when he managed to sneak the ball home during a goalmouth scramble. – Sapa
