Thug punched former partner in drunken rage

JEALOUS Stephen Mason has been jailed after he broke his ex-partner's eye socket and jaw.

The 35-year-old, of Catherine Road, Chell Heath, was in a relationship with Wendy Crane for about 18 months and they split up in the autumn, about three weeks before the incident on October 9.

Prosecutor Robert Price told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court Mason verbally abused Miss Crane in The Bradeley pub, Stratheden Road, Burslem, in the afternoon and he followed her when she left.

He snatched her phone from her and when she returned to her home, he was outside and told her he had smashed it.

Mr Price said: "There was a heated argument, but it became physical.

"There was mutual pushing.

"He punched her once to the face. It was a heavy blow which knocked her off her feet to the ground.

"He grabbed her by her hair and shook her."

Mr Price told the court Mason, who has no previous convictions, had not been violent towards Miss Crane before.

The defendant pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Anis Ali, defending, said Mason acted out of character.

He said: "He really did not intend what happened.

"Excessive consumption of alcohol affected his judgment. There was a degree of jealousy, which he now accepts.

"He has shown genuine remorse and regret."

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones jailed Mason for 20 weeks.

He told him: "It is quite clear in th period which followed the separation between you and your former partner that you manifestly failed to come to terms with it.

"On the night, you were shadowing her or following her, being a nuisance, aggrieved to think she may have come into contact with somebody else.

"There was an argument and you were pushing each other. But then you hit her.

"You punched her, knocking her to the ground. She was a vulnerable victim; you are a very well built man.

"It really had serious issues, fractures of her eye socket and jaw area, and required an operation for the insertion of metal plates. They are very serious injuries. They were caused by you.

"In my view, there has to be a custodial sentence, and immediate."
