SHERWOOD'S police station could be saved from possible closure by sharing its building with the post office.
That is the idea put forward by the postmaster of Sherwood Post Office, who says he is willing to contribute towards the lease of the police station.
Simon Mayes said officers at Sherwood Police Station thought it was a good idea.
But he said he believed Notts Police then rejected the idea, although a group campaigning to save the police station has been told by police that the offer has not been ruled out.
Mr Mayes said: "It was something we wanted to do and something we were keen to do.
"We heard the police station was under threat of closure.
"With things not being good for us too, myself and my colleagues thought wouldn't it be good to have a word with them, rather than lose the police station?"
Mr Mayes described Sherwood Police Station as "absolutely vital" for the area.
"To have a population as big as Sherwood without any police presence would be really detrimental," he said.
He has been based in Sherwood since 1995, and said crime was much worse before the police station opened in 2007.
"Years ago there was quite a bad crime record in Sherwood," he said. "We don't want to go back to those days."
If Sherwood Police Station closes, it will leave Sherwood and Mapperley Park Neighbourhood Watch Association without a contact point and place to operate CCTV.
Officers from Nottingham City Council's Neighbourhood Management team also have an office at the station, and it is possible they would have to move out of Sherwood if the station closes.
The police station was previously a bank and the building is leased to Notts Police by Lloyds TSB.
Notts Police would not confirm how much the lease was, but it is thought to be between 21,000 and 23,000 a year.
The city council currently pays a contribution to the rent and if the Post Office also contributed this would leave around 10,000 for Notts Police to pay each year.
Those against the closure of the police station include Nottingham East MP Chris Leslie and all of the councillors for the Sherwood ward.
Notts Police would not comment specifically on Sherwood, but in a statement, DCC Chris Eyre said: "Last autumn a comprehensive review of buildings and sites owned or leased, by Notts Police got under way.
"No decisions have yet been made about any of these sites. A working group is carrying out the review and will report its findings to the Police Authority, as owners of the estate, to make any final decisions."
