Notts tourists arrive back from Tunisia after being evacuated by airlines

NOTTS holidaymakers have spoken about being evacuated from Tunisia after violent protests saw the country's president flee.

Jo Coxon, 59, from Trowell, was staying in Port el Kantoaui and flown back to Birmingham Airport.

She said she would have stayed on holiday if she could as she saw little trouble.

She said: "It's absolutely fine, we've had a fabulous holiday.

"There's troops on the streets and tanks but it's absolutely fine. I didn't want to come back."

But Carol Carney, 65, from Nottingham, who was holidaying with husband Seamus, 72, at the Marco Polo Hotel in Yasmine Hammamet, arrived at Manchester airport on Saturday night.

Mrs Carney said: "It was a fabulous holiday, it's just that we were only there for three days and we were confined to the hotel for the whole time.

"We had no idea what was happening until we got the bus to Monastir and there were two or three buildings on fire and soldiers and gangs of men with sticks.

"When we got to the Monastir Airport it was absolutely mad. People were packed in like sardines and it took a very long time to find out what flight we were on and when it was going."

Debs Eustace, 45, from Bramcote, waited for daughter Katie to arrive back after a trip to celebrate her 22nd birthday.

Mrs Eustace, an accounts manager, said: "It was difficult for me, as a mum, watching the pictures on the news last night and trying to get hold of her, but Katie seemed to take it all in her stride.

"She only got half way through her holiday and it's disappointing but I'm just glad she's home and safe."

A flight by Thomson arrived at East Midlands Airport at around 2.30am Sunday morning.

No further flights are scheduled for the airport.

Arrangements were made to evacuate around 2,000 British tourists from the country.

The Foreign Office has advised against all but essential travel to Tunisia.
