POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was pushed over and had her bag snatched.
The 72-year-old, thought to be from the Abbey Hulton area, was walking along Greasley Road, in Abbey Hulton, at around 10.30am on Wednesday when she was approached from behind and pushed to the floor.
She needed hospital treatment after breaking her right wrist and fracturing her left shoulder.
Officers attended the scene and have been talking to residents in the area to try and piece together what happened.
Police say the offender, a man in his 20s, took a plastic bag she was holding and is believed to have run off down Priory Road.
A police spokesman said: "Fortunately, the bag contained no money or anything of value."
People living near to where the incident happened, just before Greasley Road's junction with Whitehouse Road, said the woman could often be seen walking along the road and would always be pleasant to people.
Lorraine Crook, aged 51, of Greasley Road, who works at a newsagents, said: "I think it is disgusting, especially because it happened in broad daylight.
"It looks like someone was picking on her because they knew she couldn't fight back.
"This area is getting worse and worse."
One of her neighbours, who did not want to be identified, said: "It happened outside my sister's house.
"She didn't see what happened because she was busy in the kitchen but saw the ambulance when it arrived.
"People thought she had just fallen over at first."
She added: "I have never know anything like this happen in this area before."
Another Greasley Road resident, who also asked to remain anonymous, added: "The woman is a lovely old lady. She wouldn't hurt anyone.
"It is sad what has happened to her. I think it is awful."
The pensioner was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire for treatment.
The offender is described as a white male, approximately 6ft 2in tall and of a thin build.
He had short, brown hair and was clean shaven.
The man was wearing a blue hooded top, blue denim jeans and black shoes.
