|||Ajax Cape Town stand on the verge of a first ever Absa Premiership title and will clinch the league championship if they beat Maritzburg United at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon, kick-off at 15h00.
The Urban Warriors could have wrapped up the league in the last round of games but they were handed a 4-0 beating away to Kaizer Chiefs. Foppe de Haan’s side need to put that defeat behind them and focus on the task at hand.
Victory over the Team of Choice would assure Ajax of the title, regardless of what Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs do in their matches against Golden Arrows and AmaZulu respectively. The Cape team could in theory afford to draw or even lose, provided the same thing happens to Bucs and Amakhosi, but Ajax will want to keep their fate in their own hands.
To that end, the Urban Warriors should be highly confident of picking up the three points. They have the best home record in the league this season, having won 12 of the 14 Absa Premiership matches in which they have played host. Ajax have won eight successive home matches since their only home defeat this season, 0-1 against Mamelodi Sundowns back in December last year.
Furthermore, Maritzburg have little other than pride left to play for this season. The KwaZulu-Natal team has secured their top flight status with back-to-back victories over Black Aces and (most impressively) Mamelodi Sundowns but they cannot finish in the top eight.
Ajax have an inferior head-to-head record with Maritzburg, having won just three times against the Team of Choice in nine league meetings since 2005/06. In fact, United defeated the Cape side 3-0 when the teams met in Pietermaritzburg back in January.
However, the Urban Warriors have not been beaten at home by the KZN team in four previous matches. A win for Ajax Cape Town would then serve a duel purpose: gaining revenge for Maritzburg’s victory earlier this season and clinching the Absa Premiership title for 2010/11. – Backpage Txt
