Custody for teenager who robbed paperboy of his phone

TEENAGER Peter Percy Rogers has been given a custodial sentence after robbing a paperboy of his bike and mobile phone.

The 19-year-old committed the offence at 4.50pm on February 1, as the 14-year-old victim made his way home after finishing his round.

Neil Ahuja, prosecuting, told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court that the offence took place on an old railway track. The boy had stopped to use his phone when Rogers took hold of his bike's handlebars and demanded the mobile.

The boy refused but Rogers eventually took it, ordering his victim not to tell anyone or follow him.

However, the victim told his mother about what had happened and he identified Rogers, of Tunstall Road, Knypersley, from police pictures of offenders.

The offence happened only a week after Rogers had been handed a four-month suspended sentence for taking a vehicle without consent, driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Rogers, who has 26 previous convictions for 62 offences, pleaded guilty to robbery.

Peter McCartney, mitigating, said the robbery was committed with a minimal threat of force.

Judge Michael Dudley sentenced Rogers to a total of 12 months in a young offenders' institution; eight months for the robbery and the four months suspended sentence.
