Staff and residents of Amber Valley retirement village have expressed their shock at the news of Rob Taylor’s death.
|||Staff and residents of Amber Valley retirement village, in Howick, were in shock yesterday as it was confirmed that a body found below the Table Mountain cable car was that of Rob Taylor, who had developed the village.
Cape Town police said yesterday that the man had been positively identified as the property developer.
At around 8.15pm on Sunday, police received a call from search and rescue workers saying there was a body below the cable car. An inquest docket was opened.
Taylor, a well-known developer, pilot and skydiving enthusiast, made headlines in January, 2010 when he gave eight car guards at the cable station a brand new Audi worth more than R2 million and R20 000 in cash.
Despite being of means, Taylor appears to have been a man who hated being in the limelight and largely kept to himself.
Several Howick residents The Mercury spoke to said that while they knew of Taylor, they knew very little about the man himself.
A spokesman at Amber Valley said there was no one who could speak to the media. “All the staff are in a state of shock at the moment.”
Local property consultant and former SA Property Association head TC Chetty said Taylor “seemed to be very successful, but kept below the radar”.
A friend, who refused to be named, said the entire Howick community would miss Taylor “dearly”.
Others told of a man who would not hesitate to help those who had fallen on hard times, without expecting anything in return, and that he had lent his fancy cars to pupils to make a grand arrival at their matric balls.
Some painted a picture of a man who liked to keep to himself and who struggled to make friends, as people appeared to be attracted to his money.
Several people The Mercury spoke to said they would not comment on the record as they did not have the authority of Taylor’s family to do so. - The Mercury
