THE cloudy atmosphere surrounding the succession plan of the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) after four years of Mr. Bankole Ademulegun as President disappeared last week with the emergence of the Chief Executive Officer, Charella Nigeria Limited, Mr. Charles Chijide as the new president.
Chijide defeated the former secretary general of the association and managing director of Grapro Limited, Prince Emeka Okezie with 35 votes against 11 votes. The contest became a straight fight between the two when the electoral committee of OAAN had disqualified Yinka Adepoju, former 1st vice president and the prime contender for post on flimsy grounds.
The post of the publicity secretary of OAAN went unopposed to Chidozie Mbanefo of New Crystal Communication Limited while the assistant general secretary also went unopposed to Mr. Emmanuel Ajufo of Marketing & Media Limited.
The ex-officio position paraded Mrs. Ifeyinwa Pamela Onukwuba, Mr. Ladi Taiwo, Mr. Idowu B. Adedoyin and Mr. Babatunde A. Oyekan as contestants but won by Mr. Ladi Taiwo.
However, the positions which were not filled at the AGM are the vice president, secretary general and treasurer.
Aspirants to these positions were said to have failed to scale the screening hurdle, while some voluntarily withdrew from the race. Nonetheless, the association at its extra-ordinary quarterly meeting decided to hold bye-elections to fill the vacant positions that may not be contested at the forthcoming annual general meeting.
In a well attended 26th AGM/election of the 83 years old association, sources within the sector revealed that practitioners were hopeful about a rancour free election annual general meeting which is aimed at putting OAAN on a sound footing after the current exco led by Ademulegun has successfully consolidated the association and the industry through the giant strides achieved in the last four years.
Speaking on the association?s plans for the future, Ademulegan said the ugly experiences of the past have certainly been put behind them, adding that OAAN members have turned the challenges of the past to opportunities.
According to him, we have suffered so much in the past in the hands of various regulatory agencies, but today, we have come out stronger and better? he said, adding that the storm is over.
On his vision for OAAN, Ademulegun said he would be glad to see in-coming leaders raising the bar of practice beyond where he stopped.
?I want to wake up any time in future and see OAAN of my dream actualized. I have always been an outdoor advertising person, it is a profession where you cannot rest on your oars.? He stated that there are more opportunities out there for practitioners.
The industry has re-invented itself with new billboard products, which have contributed immensely to brands equity growth and development.
