Ticket sales top 13,000 for Stags visit to Wembley

MORE than 13,000 Mansfield Town fans have bought tickets for the club's big day at Wembley for the FA Trophy final.

Stags supporters have been queuing up outside the ticket office at Field Mill for the chance to see the clash against Darlington this Saturday.

Yesterday was the final day for ticket sales for the club's first major final since 2004 when they faced Huddersfield Town in the League Two Playoff final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

Club staff have been inundated with calls for tickets and merchandise ahead of the final.

The club's ticket office supervisor Joanne Barker said: "Our phone lines have been red hot right from the moment we began selling.

"People were queuing from 6am in the morning outside our ticket office when tickets went on sale on March 29.

"There was an initial mad rush which saw us sell 2,776 in just one day."

Club shop manager Anne Matthews has also been busy.

She said: "The club shop is now almost bare after we placed huge orders for Wembley merchandise around six weeks ago.

"People have snapped up flags, jester hats and limited-edition shirts ready for the big day."

Club chairman John Radford said that he was looking forward to his team's day at Wembley.

He said: "The wait is now almost unbearable. It is really encouraging to see so many people supporting our club on this big day.

"Everyone is getting right behind us in what should be a great day out for the club and our fans."

The Field Mill club started the competition with a 5-0 win at Worksop and defeated Newport County, Alfreton Town, and Chasetown to set up a semi-final with Luton Town in March.

Danny Mitchley gave the Stags a one-goal advantage ahead of the second leg.

After conceding early in the second half at the tie at Luton's Kenilworth Road, Louis Briscoe gave the Stags the goal in extra time to book their first Wembley appearance for nearly 25 years.

The club are hoping for a repeat of the 1987 Freight Rover Trophy final when they beat Bristol City to lift the cup.

On Saturday the club held an open day for fans to watch the players train and meet the coaching staff, as well as buy merchandise ahead of the trip to London.

Speaking on the day, the club's chief executive Steve Barker said he was looking forward to the final.

He added: "There is a great atmosphere sweeping through the club and the town."
