Nairobi - Kenyan police are investigating at least four members of parliament over allegations they are involved in drug trafficking, internal security minister George Saitoti said on Wednesday.

He told parliament police were investigating Harun Mwau, a deputy cabinet minister, Gideon Mbuvi, William Kabogo and Hassan Joho in connection with alleged involvement in the drug trade.

“There are serious investigations under way... None of the persons mentioned is guilty until they have been properly investigated and there is evidence,” said Saitoti, who is minister for internal security and provincial administration.

“There has been a persistent demand by members of this parliament to know who are being investigated.”

Saitoti then named the four MPs, three of who were present. Mbuvi, Kabogo and Joho said they were innocent of any charges related to the drug trade.

“The list is full of false allegations,” said Mbuvi, who was elected to parliament for the first time in September.

“These are smear campaigns to bring me down, and I ask the state to do thorough investigations. I want the full force of the law to apply for those who mentioned my name,” Joho said.

Kabogo denied the allegations but said he had information that other prominent Kenyans were also being investigated in connection with drug trafficking.

Mwau was not in parliament and was not available to comment.

Four senior Kenyan government officials and a businessman have been permanently banned from travelling to the United States over allegations of trafficking narcotics, the US ambassador to Kenya said last month.

Ambassador Michael Ranneberger, who did not name them, said the United States would help east Africa's biggest economy in its fight against drugs.

Kenya's position makes it an ideal destination and transit point for both heroin and cocaine, he said. - Reuters
