Helpline plea to protect children

PEOPLE concerned about children being abused or mistreated over the holiday period are being urged to call the NSPCC helpline.

Calls drop significantly between Christmas and New Year, which the NSPCC says potentially leaves some children at risk of harm.

Last Christmas Eve there were 33 calls made from across the UK, but that fell to just 11 on Christmas Day and 25 on Boxing Day, an 80 per cent drop on the usual daily call rates.

Alcohol was a recurring problem in calls made between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, with five calls requiring police or social services to intervene.

On Boxing Day last year, the NSPCC Helpline received a call about a toddler who had been taken to hospital with a broken leg.

After discussing the family's situation in detail, the helpline adviser felt the mother may be struggling to cope and passed the concerns to Children's Services with recommendations about how the mother could be offered support.

The NSPCC Helpline – 0808 800 5000 – is free and anonymous to call and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
