HISTORIC NAMES: A primary school is introducing a new house system.
Pupils at Abbey Hulton Primary School will be split into houses named after pottery firms, including Dudson, Churchill, Emma Bridgewater and Steelite. Representatives from the companies visited the school yesterday to hold a series of workshops with the youngsters. Teacher Bronwen Gleave, senior leader at the primary school, said: "Unlike many schools, we did not have a house system in place, so when we created the houses, we also wanted them to be relevant to the children.
"We wanted to make a team community within the school to link to the wider community."
She added: "Yesterday, the children were introduced to the companies and learned about what they sold and where they exported to.
"Encouraging the children to learn about the companies helps to establish links."
Seen with Emma Bridgewater's event co-ordinator Laurie Clarke are pupils Amellia Maddan, aged eight, and nine-year-old Damien Patrick.
