The hunt is on for our unsung heroes

ORDINARY folk who go the extra mile to help others are set to be officially recognised with the launch of the Our Heroes awards scheme.

For the sixth consecutive year, The Sentinel has teamed up with Britannia to run the campaign.

It is aimed at honouring unsung individuals and groups from across Staffordshire and South Cheshire for their efforts and goodwill.

There are nine categories and we are appealing for people to come forward with nominations. The paper will be featuring the stories of nominees every day between May 2 and the end of July. Our Heroes will culminate in an Oscar-style awards ceremony this autumn.

Ena Lowe, from Butt Lane, near Kidsgrove, won the Good Neighbour award last year. She was put forward for her countless hours of voluntary work, which includes running Butt Lane Community Centre, organising weekly games of bowls and bingo, and taking pensioners on trips.

Ena said: "It's nice that somebody respects what you do and thinks enough of you to nominate you for something like this. There are so many people doing good things who are just taken for granted."

Maureen Worman and her husband Peter won the Adult Carer award last year for their work fostering more than 100 children over three decades.

The 66-year-old, of Bradwell, said: "The ceremony was a brilliant night. I don't think I'll ever have another night like it.

"Anyone who is nominated should feel a sense of pride as it is a great competition to be part of."

Potteries stage star Jonathan Wilkes has attended the awards bash for the last four years.

Johnny, who is about to embark on a West End run of the musical Chicago, said: "The Our Heroes awards night really is one of my favourite events.

"It is an opportunity for us all to show our support and admiration for some very special people."

Last year, Our Heroes attracted more than 600 entries.

Neville Richardson, chief executive of The Co-operative Financial Services, which includes Britannia, said he was delighted to support the campaign again this year.

He added: "Our Heroes has become firmly established as a highlight of the community calendar and, in previous years, we have all been moved by the truly amazing stories of extraordinary achievements, selfless courage and determination."

Mike Sassi, Editor-in-Chief of Staffordshire Sentinel News and Media, is now urging the local community to nominate worthy people.

He said: "Our Heroes is a celebration of everything that is good about our region. The winners of the awards are the warmest, kindest, most courageous people from right across our community.

"These people rarely, if ever, put themselves in the spotlight. However, they all deserve our sincere thanks."
